I think those work to lose weight if you stick with them, but as soon as you come off of it you gain all that weight back. I think the best thing to do is eat balanced & healthy food, with a splurge here and there. I don't' believe in "diets" per say, just eating healthy and make it part of your lifestyle. Eat more veggies and watch the carb intake, but no need to cut them out all together.

I make sure to eat veggies with every meal (minus breakfast usually) and they help fill me up so I'm not binging on as much pasta/bread. But when I do it's whole wheat, not white.

I'm kind of a sucker for certain health crazes. My friend just told me she became a distributor for Advocare, so now I'm considering doing their 24-day cleanse. I get super bored with programs and so I'm always looking to mix things up to keep on track.

@babyjmama, oh definitely! could you at least use it on your lunch break? You can get 20 min of cardio in and not break enough of a sweat to have to change. Or even just walking. Or lifting weights.

@jetsa, well, I read Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle, and it was incredibly informative. It was geared towards what I wanted to do, and I knew I was willing to work out 5-6x/week and eat carefully to get there. I did appreciate it for its layman's terms! I felt like it was a good, short, quick book and to the point. It's less geared towards a "whole foods philosophy" (although it has a great section on nutrition) and is more about the whole package of getting lean--lifting, nutrition, cardio, etc. Sort of the whole break down of how fitness competitors strip fat down and shape their muscles.

Honestly, in my house, I cook. So he eats whatever i make and he STFU about it, or i stop making food for the family

@grizz: Yeah, I started packing up dinner once I've portioned out my plate so that I can't go back for seconds (I COULD but it would already be in the fridge!). I like the "take it or leave it" options ;) He'd probably leave it HAHA! :)

@IRunForFun: Great idea! I've got some healthy blogs pinned, I'm going to start looking for recipes!

@TemperanceBrennan: I'd like to think he'd be adventurous, but I juuuust don't know if he will. I'll totally give it a shot though. Something's gotta give!

@swurlygurl: LOL yeah, my problem is kind of both ;) Mostly exercise and the kinds of foods I eat. I've changed my portions over the years to be pretty good sizes for me but I'm just not eating healthy or exercising enough. I need a cheerleader like you! :)

@blackbird: My work has a fitness center but it's focused mainly on our residents (retirement community) and not employees...I might suggest that we change that! I really do need someone to say "did you work out last night? girrrrl those pants are lookin' a little snug, get your ass on the dreadmill!" :)

Coming back to add that for accountability, I have friends that I touch base with regularly who think like me. Birds of a feather etc. I also do a weekly weigh in and measure on Wednesdays.

Accountability to someone is considered the fifth building black of success. Health coaches, significant others, trainer etc. Sometimes companies offer these benefits (mine offers free health coaching and she does a weekly walk at our site)

I'm also not a fan of all those diet plans and meal replacement stuff. I'm reading a book about eating healthy right now and one thing it mentioned is that the act of chewing sends signals to your brain about eating and works in conjunction with the digestive tract to send signals when you start to feel full- but if you're drinking your food, those signals aren't the same. I am all for green smoothies but because of that I don't make it a meal replacement.

I agree with previous posters about eating real food smartly.

I'm just echoing previous posters really, but yep, eat REAL food, and eat smartly. I do a ton of meal prep and planning and I think it's easier than eating shortcut/processed food.

I too, use protein shakes to get in the amount of protein I need in a day, but I eat them as a snack replacement/post workout snack. It would not be nearly enough calories to replace a meal for me!!

And I track using my Fitness Pal, but I go way over their "recommended" protein. I need it for muscle fueling and repair because I do crossfit.

@babyjmama: B has started using Lose It (similar to MFP, etc) to track his calories. He's been doing that for 5 months, and with NOTHING else, has dropped 30 pounds like it was nothing. (Of course, he is a man and men are stupid and can lose weight like that... haha). It has really opened our eyes to the calories we eat. ALSO, when we know we have to log (since I'm pregnant I'm not doing it, but I do help him with his, and it is affecting me too) we make MUCH better choices. Friday night dinners we eat with his family and have pizza - usually we have 3-4+ pieces without thinking about it, but we've been consistently sticking with 2 pieces for these last few months, because now we're always conscious about what we're eating. This flows into EVERY aspect, and we're just always aware of what we're eating - we snack SO much less, and don't take work snacks for granted anymore.

It's A LOT of work and you really have to want to do it (B keeps going through spells where he wants to give up, but I have to help keep him motivated), but it's amazingly helpful!!

BUT, if food isn't your problem, and exercise is, then I got nothing for you - we still haven't figured out that problem... haha!

I use the Noom phone app to track my meals. It has a "coach" feature that gives you links to articles, motivation, etc. I'm on board with most of what it teaches - portion control, healthy whole foods, etc. It does push low-fat dairy while I prefer full fat in limited quantities. It's also the easiest food logging app I've found because it emphasizes estimation over having a huge database of very specific foods.

You say your are really busy, so this might not be possible to help your your DH to broaden his die, but my husband has been SO MUCH more adventurous since he has started helping me make dinner. We use the Fresh 20 like Grizz, and even though he says he's really picky, he's enjoying a much wider variety of food and is learning much more about cooking and nutrition.

@babyjmama: I think, in terms of having a picky husband, you can find a lot of substitutions/replacements for the things he likes to eat. For example, instead of mac and cheese with pasta, you could do mac and cheese using spaghetti squash, or you could do cheesy cauliflower casserole, or still use pasta but do a butternut squash mac and cheese. I do a faux fried chicken (so kind of similar to shake and bake coating) using crushed flax cereal on chicken with a spray of olive oil and then baking it. If you start reading whole foods blogs you'll find tons of suggestions!

@babyjmama: You could base your menu on what he'll eat, and modify your portions. Like say, he'll eat shake & bake chicken. You could find a healthier coating recipe, and then you can fill your plate out with veggies even if you don't put any on his plate. Or you could be a jerk like me, and tell him there are two things on the menu this evening: take it, or leave it ;)

@babyjmama: I think it takes a little bit of an investment up front just to get into the habit of doing things. But you can access the tracker via smartphone app...so it's actually pretty easy. If I'm good about tracking food BEFORE I eat it I find I'm much more successful. That's the hardest thing for me, taking the time to plan out healthy/balanced choices.

But if I spend 30-60 minutes at night planning out the next day and knowing I'm prepared with healthy options, then it becomes easier (or, even better, if I spend an hour or two on Sunday to prepare for the whole week)

As for "coaching"...you might want to read the Beck Diet Solution. It's super easy to read (it's divided so you can read one section a day) and is focused around building healthy thoughts so that it's easier to make smart choices. You constantly remind yourself WHY you want to eat healthy while also working on building healthier habits. It works really well with either MFP or WW (any type of tracking diet)

I hate all these things, too. And i DO take protein shakes. But they are 100% whey or blends. Not overpriced powders that are "meal replacements". And I know why I take them, what they are for, and how they fit into my macro breakdown.

I hate the idea of eating/drinking "fake food" to lose weight (I'm looking at you, Nutrisystem and Medifast). What happens when you start eating again?! Oh yeah, you gain it all back. Plus, what a miserable way to eat. Five fake candy bar flavored bars a day? Fake pizza? No.

I don't think some of those things, like shakeology, are harmful in small quantities. No, i don't think a protein shake once in awhile is a big deal if you're short on time. But they have specific uses and they are not whole meal replacements. Nothing can replace the quality of nutrients in real food.

It's companies preying on people, really. People who are too overwhelmed by the process and just want to be told, "it's easy. Drink this powder. Eat one meal a day. You'll lose so much weight!"

No, no, no, no, no!! haha! I hate all those things. This is my current soapbox.

I basically think it comes down to eating a healthful balance of REAL food. Not powders, not shakes, not ingredients you can't pronounce. I have learned a lot over the last 6 months because I started studying the balance of glycemic load, macronutrients, etc. I've read books, started reading blogs like Food Babe, and watched a lot of food documentaries...they are SO eye opening! Its a work in progress, but we've eliminated almost all processed foods from our diet and we feel SO much better. I have talked a lot with Bees like @Blackbird: about nutrition, and discovered a lot of gaps in mine. Like snacking on carrots thinking they're healthy, but they don't fill me up like the same amount of calories in a protein would. I use MyFitnessPal to make sure I'm eating around 40% protein, 40% carbs, and 20% fat daily. My meals usually consist of a lean protein, a fibrous carb, and a complex carb with starch (like a chicken breast, broccoli, and a baked sweet potato).

I think the shakes, powders, etc can offer a quick fix, but I don't think they are healthy long term. They're just not a sustainable life change.

I use MyFitnessPal.com to track what I eat, and I try to eat as whole and natural food as I can. I could never afford to buy specific products for the rest of my life, so I don't see them as long term solutions.

I did do a plan where food was provided for me a few months before my wedding only because my issue was not having the time or energy left to prepare meals. I knew it was a short term solution though, and that I'd have to eventually go back to meal planning and tracking what I eat.
