@littlejoy: Nice!! That's great the insurance company was willing to adjust and not say no just to make a buck.

I heard from my CPA - there is no penalty for a loss in coverage under 3 months. The insurance company offered to have my effective coverage date on 9/1 instead of 8/1. Thanks for everyone who encouraged me to look into this!!

Such crooks. Because of the back dating they will probably make you pay, unless you don't mind putting up a fight.

@littlejoy: That small of a gap in coverage wouldn't have tax consequences but since they back dated your coverage anyway, if you had seen someone they technically should have covered it. Therefore, I doubt you will get to pay for a partial month, unfortunately. I hate health insurance companies!

This happened to my parents also (sort of) when my dad left his firm and they swapped their insurance for COBRA. If they backdate the insurance, you could technically still see a provider and submit the claim after you got the cards. The insurance probably wouldn't tell you that because they tend to be greedy jerks who don't want to pay claims :( You are gonna have to pay for the whole month I bet. Sorry mama.

In the future, I am pretty sure you can have a little gap without incurring a tax penalty.

This has happened twice at work, switched but didn't have insurance cards until halfway through the following month, and we have had to pay the full month twice. I think the logic is if we had ended up in the ER or hospitalized we would still be covered 100%, even though the Drs won't make a non urgent care appt until you have an insurance card in hand.

This happened with my DH and because they back dated it, he (but actually in his case it was his employer and he had to jump through another hoop for getting that sorted out) he did owe for the full month. The company said its this way because he could have gone to the doctor at any point during the time when he was waiting for his ID and cards and either asked the doctor not to bill until the information came in or he could have paid and the insurance company would reimburse him. He did go to the doctor and they did end up delaying billing. So I feel like it might be standard to have to pay the whole month?

@kiddosc: That's a great thing to look into. Obviously I was just scrambling after getting the cancellation notice on 7/21. Lots of "to avoid tax penalties, get coverage now!" language. I will talk to my CPA about changing the effective date, and how that puts me at risk for any penalty.

@littlejoy: Would such a small gap in coverage really incur tax penalties? I would look into that and then have the insurance company change the effective date of coverage back to the 18th. It sucks that no one told you you could see a doctor, I doubt the people on the phone always know that kind of information. :bummed:

@kiddosc: It's so frustrating, because when I kept calling to check the status, and made it known that I was sick, I was never told that I could see my provider. :( I couldn't take the chance of not having it covered ... :(

Since they back dated the coverage I would assume you have to pay for the whole month. If you had seen a provider during that time, then I'd assume you could submit that bill to the insurance company and they would cover it.

I'm hoping someone with insight into the health insurance field can help me. My health insurance company shut down in July. They gave members 10 days to find new coverage. I applied with a new company immediately, but due to underwriting and processing, did not get official work of coverage until 8/18, which I received my new insurance cards. They did post-date my coverage to 8/1 for tax purposes - so I had no gap in coverage, on paper.

I received my first bill, which billed for the entire month of August. Would I be wrong in assuming that since I was not covered, and had no benefits/ID number until the 18th, that I should only be paying for the days I had access to this coverage? My daughter and I were both sick at the beginning of the month, and didn't have access to our doctor while we were waiting for new coverage.

I've just sent an email to the new insurer, but got a "due to heavy inquiry volume, please allow 10 business days for a response". Ugh.

Curious what the consensus would be in this situation.
