@graceandjoy: I had the same experience as a couple others, where any ultrasounds in the main OB's office were part of the maternity care, but anything outsourced to the hospital was billed/paid separately. I've had to fight with my insurance over a couple of things this pregnancy and I totally feel your pain. It's not fair, and I'm sorry you're going through it.

@MamaBear87: Since I have a thousand other scans coming up though I feel like paying deductible might be a better deal... But since I already spent so much time on this I should look into it!

We had a high deductible plan and paid for basically everything before we hit the deductible. The office we did ultrasounds through had a discounted price through our insurance.

Since you have to pay deductible twice it might be worth checking what the cash pay price is to see if it would be cheaper that way. We no longer have insurance and nearly everything has been cheaper cash pay so far 🙄 us insurance is so bad at this point

@graceandjoy: I feel your pain, I had two January babies!! It was the silver lining of having a hot summer baby to be on one calendar year for all appointments :silly:

@KT326: Uggh I would say that was def a saving grace! I would't be AS annoyed if I could've combined all these things into 1 calendar year!

@graceandjoy: I have a HDHP and for my pregnancy in 2016 any in-office ultrasounds were covered under maternity but any outsourced were not. So I had to pay for my anatomy scan ($1,400 + $250 for the radiologist!). Thankfully I had my baby in December so it all fell under one deductible.

@bhbee: I'm AMA too plus other risks and it's not SO much just the money... I CAN afford it, it's just the surprise of it. I had already saved up deductible for next year for hospital stay so now I have to use that for 2019 and re-save for 2020.

@kiddosc: I'm due Feb too! Uggh so annoying. Thank you for commiserating with me!

I ran into this problem with my last pregnancy too. Ultrasounds were considered imaging and subject to deductible and then covered at 80% after. I didn't know until after my NT scan and had to pay for separately for all our ultrasounds. And DD was born in February, so I had to start over on the deductible for the birth

Ugh I’m sorry. Insurance is so awful sometimes. I’d try and call again - maybe you’ll get a better person. It’s weird there’s an ultrasound category and a radiology category?

That said we’re on a HDHP and this last pregnancy all of my ultrasounds (I had extra for being AMA) were subject to deductible. My actual visits were covered under one of those umbrella payments to the OB at delivery, but not the ultrasounds even though they happened in the same office. And of course birth charges from the facility (for both me and baby), pediatrician, etc were all separate.

Hugs ❤️ I did think about refusing some of the growth ultrasounds (which were just AMA routine not based on concerns) to save $ so I get it!

My work has changed our insurance a few times, so I'm pretty sure I never had the exact same plan for any pregnancy, BUT the last 2 pregnancy, scans were def all covered under prenatal care.

I was billed for my first major ultrasound at the hospital at 12 weeks. I checked with hospital and they coded it correctly. So now I'm back with insurance arguing about it. This person is saying that ultrasound falls under radiology which is subjected to deductible. But I already have maternity services AND an actual ultrasound category. Why on earth would this ultrasound not be under basic maternity coverage or even ultrasound coverage, and randomly goes to radiology which is the only category out of the 3 subjected to deductible?

I am just so upset because I've never not have routine ultrasounds (or even extra ultrasounds ordered due to high risks) not covered. I already had my 20 wk ultrasound as well, so now I'll have to pay for that too? I'm also due for a fetal echo AND an additional growth ultrasound next month due to certain risk factors. So if I can't afford it, I am just supposed to forgo all ultrasounds from the beginning? What kind of maternity service is that? And to make me angrier, I pay an arm & a leg for premiums.

Uggh, sorry for the emotional rant. Pregnancy hormones and spending days and endless phone calls trying to figure this out really wore me out. And this lady on the phone can't even find the exact info on my certificate of coverage... Has anyone else been through something similar? It's almost like they're telling me I can't appeal b/c it's part of my plan but they can't even find the exact printed words where it shows me 100% black & white that prenatal ultrasounds fall under radiology and is subjected to deductible.
