@BabyBoecksMom: I had 60 days to add LO to my insurance, too. I think 30 is standard but it's definitely not a hard-and-fast rule. That said, my employer made things difficult (not purposely, they were just really slow and kept coming back to me with things they needed that they hadn't told me about) so it took forever for the change to go through.

I've been told it has to be called in within 48hrs of the birth in order for it to be covered. So that's what we did. But 30 days makes sense.

@Danizaur: Glad he's going to start the process. We had to fight to get some of Hyla's things covered even though we started the process right away, but that had more to do with the inadequacy of the person we were talking to.

@BabyBoecksMom: Yeah she does. Forgot to mention that. She works at DH's company who our insurance is through.

I convinced DH to start the process of it. It was stressing me out. Lol

I think 30 days is standard. We had to take LO to the ER at 7 weeks so definitely don't play games with getting him on your insurance. Just do it now. I'm sure your husband can just email is HR dept to get the ball rolling.

@Danizaur: does your aunt work in HR for your company? Just checking because my insurance said that I only had 30 days to add her to my coverage, otherwise I would have to wait until the next enrollment period. She wasn't automatically covered by either of ours until insurance had her information.

You have a set amount of days like pp have stated, but I would recommend you go ahead and call now. It can take awhile, and we wound up having to jump through some hops to make sure everything was fine in time. For example, we had to have our official birth certificate, and I really had to hound that office to make sure we got it in time to submit it.

Make sure that once you add the baby that you turn in any documentation they need. I'd call and confirm you're all good separately after adding. My work needed the birth declaration from the hospital but didn't tell me that!

Since we put LO on her own individual plan, we went in to sign her up yesterday and will have it kick back to her DOB. I'd ask DH to at least call HR to verify what needs to be completed and by when. You don't want the PITA of having to scramble last minute if a deadline is coming up.

LO was covered under my insurance for the first 30 days, but since we put her on her own policy after, we had to get the paperwork in quickly. if it were a work policy, it probably wouldn't be as vital since he won't have to go through underwriting, but i would still call HR and see what they'll need.

Ours required a call within 48 hours of birth and then wanted the paperwork within 30 days. I'd call the customer service line ASAP just to avoid any further delay in case.

LO's one week check up is Monday, and it just hit me today that I don't know what to do about insurance. Is he still covered under my insurance?

DH hasn't added him on our policy yet. He's wanting to wait until he goes back to work on the 10th to deal with HR face to face instead of trying it online on his own.

How does that work? Can't believe I just now thought about this!
