So long as your company has previously paid premiums surrounding a birth while using this insurance plan, I'd assume HR's answer is the more reliable one.

Anyway, it's mentally more comfortable to assume you're going to pay it (and potentially be pleasantly surprised), then the other way around.

@Iced Tea: YES. These are the issues. The language is deceptive. I agree - the issue is the difference between 'covered' and when premiums are incurred. And I think each plan/state has different rules about this.

We've been screwed by the "accepted" language as well. When I tell people about how much my medical bills are they always ask, "but isn't that covered". and the answer is always "yes, but when something is "covered" an my co-pay is 30% of some outrageous number, it's still super expensive!"

Coverage doesn't mean 'paid for' it just means subject to the rules of your particular plan (which clear as mud on their own!)

I think there is some confusion here. I'm not in the insurance industry, nor do I live in CA, but I do have an HMO plan in a different state.

To my knowledge, covered does not mean free coverage. It just means your coverage (within the terms of your plan/premiums) is extended to the baby on the mother's plan within 30 days of birth to allow time to get them added to the plan as an independent being. In my case, there was an additional premium charge taken from my paycheck to pay for that 30 days of coverage, the month after my children were born.

here are the actual numbers from my paystub:
August - pre-kid, individual premium $128
September - kid born, charged new individual + child premium ($246) + additional pro-rated premium for coverage of baby happening after birth, before added to policy ($118) for total charge that month of $364
October - charged new individual + child premium of $246

The word "covered" is the problem. Individuals and insurance companies don't use this word in the same way. To the insurance industry, "covered" doesn't mean paid for, it just means carrying health insurance.

For what it's worth, I was told I MUST enroll my baby in the first 30 days, or else any payments on her behalf would be reversed. My first payment post-enrollment was a larger one because it included a partial month premium for the month she was born.

Another word that makes people feel screwed is when medical offices say they "accept" your insurance. You assume it means they are in-network, but it only means they will send bills to your insurance; they could actually be out-of network! I've been screwed by this one before. :meh:

@Mrsbells: It's so insane. I ALWAYS thought baby was covered under the mother's premium for 30 days and it's been confirmed to me time and time again - twice by people at my insurance company!! But it wasn't until my 5th person that I spoke to that they said that it differs from the HMO and PPO plans in CA. And STILL no one can direct me to literature or documentation that any of it is valid. It's all just been someone's word. I just hate this feeling of being taken advantage of and having zero control (welcome to parenthood - ha!)

@math.nerd: oh I see... with my last two births we added thr baby closer to the 4th week after birth and didn't get any extra premium during that period. I always thought thr baby was covered under the mother's insurance premium. But maybe it depends on the state and type of insurance?

@Mrsbells: This is exactly what I thought was the case! But now my insurance is telling me that, yes the baby will be 'covered' but that her premium payments begin on the day she is born. And I can't find anything online that specifies this! I think the issue is that maybe the law says that they have to be 'covered' - like they can't be denied coverage if you haven't paid yet, but you still eventually have to pay???

@math.nerd: under Obama care the rule was newborns are covered under the mothers plan for the 1st 30 days of life. It is only on the 31st day that the baby needs their own insurance. I dont think that has been changed yet. This is a legal requirement

@math.nerd: I'm in CA too and my employer only offers high deductible plans. It sucks. I don't remember what happened when my first was born (in 2012) but with my second I was already on the family plan so I didn't have a difference in my premiums. But I still ended up paying almost $6k out of pocket for his birth, on top of the $5k we spent just trying to get pregnant....

@math.nerd: it is the worst  ours would also be reversed if we didn't sign baby up within 30 days, thankfully at least we're already on a family premium. I think that's pretty common but so crappy. I feel like we pretty much just pay premiums for disaster insurance or to get the negotiated rates . . . I am expecting to pay our full OOP max this year, the only thing insurance has paid is mandated stuff like immunizations. so I'm with you in being angry!!

@Sams Mom: same. When both of my kids were born, birth - 30 days was covered as an expense under my coverage, and they were enrolled as an additional beneficiary as of day 31 of life.

@peachykeen: The person I spoke with this morning at first thought it was like what you described - her first premium would be incurred the first of the month after she was born. So if she was born August 2nd or Aug 31st, her first premium would be due Sept. 1.

@peachykeen: This was my expectation! What state are you in??

This is the latest information I got from a "premium specialist" at the insurance company. (I'm in CA and apparently this is a CA specific rule).

If you're on an HMO, the first 30 days are covered at no additional premium as long as you enroll the baby within the 30 days. However, if you have a PPO there's no such benefit. Premiums are charged as of day of birth.

Of course, my work ONLY offers a f*cking expensive PPO which covers SO LITTLE that I'm in horrible debt from medical bill. (Can you tell I'm upset?) so therefore, I'm paying her premium from day 1.
If I don't enroll her in my work plan, than any coverage she receives in those first 30 days will be REVERSED.

Health Insurance companies are the biggest scam. End rant. (for now)

I take care of the insurance where I work. When my son was born, he was automatically covered under my insurance for the first 30 days of life. If I chose to enroll him on my insurance, the first premium due for him would have been May's premium (born April 5). Since I enrolled him on my husband's insurance, he already had a family plan set up so it didn't raise his premiums at all, so I'm not sure how it billed. I do know our insurance broker told me I had 30 days to add him to my coverage.

I think if she's born on Aug 15th you don't owe a premium for her until the next payment is due. So for my plan that would be Sept 1 because I don't think our plan does any prorating.

@gotkimchi: thanks - I don't mind paying ahead, but I just want to know if I have to pay for the first 30 days or not.

It's weird because lets say I don't choose to put her on my plan and I put her on my husband's plan or a marketplace plan - then would my work insurance charge me for that first month where she is actually covered?

I'm currently on hold with someone at the insurance company who is now giving me yet a THIRD different answer about how the billing works.

I think this really depends on your plan - I’ve had some insurance through work we’re irs basically paid ahead - so June payments are for July coverage. And also where it’s in real time so June payment is for June - I would direct hr to contact your insurance for a final answer

I need some help on this issue!

I'm due with my second child in August and I'm trying to work out health insurance premium issues with my HR department at work.

My HR department is telling me that I will need to pay a health insurance premium for my daughter as of the day she is born. The insurance company is telling me that no premium is due for her until 30 days AFTER she is born. So, for example, if she's born on August 15th, she's automatically enrolled in the health care plan - so she's covered - but there's no additional premium payment due. If I choose to enroll her in my office plan and do so within 30 days, then she'll have her own premium payment starting Sept. 15th.

My understanding was confirmed by two insurance company employees - but neither of them could direct me to anywhere on their website or any documentation that confirms this. My HR department is saying that this is incorrect and that her first month premium will essentially kick in the day she's born.

Does anyone here know of how I can get a definitive answer on this???? PLEASE HELP! Thank you!
