@IRunForFun: I'm not sure how he caught it; my understanding is that the bacteria can live on your skin and not cause issues unless it gets into a cut. He had been scratching his leg with the edge of a knife he found in a box (which is gross enough). We caught it fairly early, the doctor drew a circle around it, gave him a cream and antibiotics and told us to go the ER for IV antibiotics if the redness extended past the circle in the next 48 hours. When he was home, I made him wrap his leg in an ace bandage, and once the 48 hours were up I washed his pants, towels, sheets, and underwear on hot. I also wiped down the mattress with a Lysol wipe.

We washed our hands religiously, especially after he cleaned the area/put on more cream. Now we keep a very close eye on any skin eruptions he has since his immune system is compromised (he's a Type 1 diabetic).

ETA: I threw out that knife, and keep telling him to never do something like that again.

@evansjamie: Really? Do you mind me asking if you know how he contracted it? Also, did you need to take any precautions to keep from catching it? I'm probably putting the cart before the horse, but I'm totally thinking about sanitizing everything...

@T.H.O.U.: Thanks! The doctor said there's a rapid swab test that takes about 5 hours for results, but that's just to determine if it is staph, and then the culture to determine the strain takes 48 hours.

Just got a call from SO, the doctor said it looks like it could be staph or MRSA and he is being sent to a surgeon to have the boils lanced and icky stuff that comes out tested. They also did a blood test for Lyme. I'll update again when we get the results!

Fingers crossed it's something minor!! I had a staph infection about 15 years ago, and it was scary ... But, it was treated quickly once it was caught. Hoping the doctor is open to looking into Lyme or anything else.

@IRunForFun: yes. This could have been a new tick. It could be a bullous cellulitis, but I don't think it would have the targetoid appearance. It is so much better to have an in-person doc seeing it than an online one :)

@Mrs. Jacks: Hmmm. OK. Sorry to bombard you with questions but about two months ago he pulled a tick off of himself. He went to the doctor right away and they gave him the one-time super strong dose of doxy but didn't do any follow-up. Should he ask his doctor to do a blood test for Lyme now in case he contracted it despite the doxy?
