@sunny: @BabyBoecksMom: @Mrs.Pinecone316: Thanks for your responses! That gives me some hope. I just started panicking and I was having trouble finding anything about this online. I'll have to talk with our Executive Director on Monday. Hopefully she'll let it be a qualifying event (if it's up to her and not our benefits provider I'm sure she will since I'm doing it to save them money). If it doesn't qualify, that would make it almost impossible to switch. That doesn't seem fair.

Just as Sunny said - that's considered a life event, so you would be able to switch to his.

You should check that open enrollment is a valid "life change" at your company. I know when I talked to my HR group they said that a spouse's open enrollment period didn't count, but when my husband checked with his HR, they said that "spousal open enrollment" was a valid reason to change benefits. It is all so confusing!

Currently I work for a very small company (about 6 employees) and me and my daughter are on my company's health insurance plan. I want to switch us to my husband's health insurance plan because finances are very tight at my company right now. His open enrollment period is ending and we have all of our paperwork in. However, I just realized that the health coverage at my company changes in May, not January. Now I'm afraid I won't be able to drop our coverage at my company until May. Does anyone have any insights on this?
