The asking to turn the TV up is what would want me to take her to get checked out. She might have an ear infection, or just wax/fluid build up in there. My kids rarely show signs of their ear infection either than a slight runny nose (no fever, pulling on the ear, etc).

sounds like a normal toddler ignoring you. my son does this all the time and it is SUPER frustrating. that being said, you should always trust your gut and it doesn't hurt at all to go to the doctor to have hearing checked. better to be safe than sorry.

ugh, sounds like my 3 yo but i know his is just selective. he'll stop sometimes and say, "what's that"? And he hears a plane flying outside that is barely audible, or hear a bird chirping.

but then I'll be standing right next to him and ask or say something and it will take a few times to get through, he's just tuning me out :(

but i wouldn't hesitate to ask your pediatrician - may as well just in case!

My son can hear me opening a wrapper from across the house, but when I call his name to do something he magically doesn't hear me.

The asking to turn the tv up would concern me as well though. I think if you have enough of a concern you should give your pediatrician a call. Like a PP said, she could just have a large wax ball in one ear!

My daughter went through this in two instances -the first time, there ended up being a huge hard wax ball in one ear. The second, her pediatrician tested her hearing and it was amazing...she was just ignoring me.

agree that it sounds normal but I wouldn't hesitate to get her hearing checked now as a precaution.

@smocks: 😂 This sounds pretty normal to me. But, if you're truly concerned, doesn't hurt to give your ped a call.

fwiw, even if you tap her on the shoulder in the middle of something, it doesn't immediately register with her. She needs to know you REALLY want her attention before she gives it...

Has anyone dealt with this? I'm not sure if my DD (3y2m) is developing a hearing issue, or if she is just developing a laser focus and blocks out all external stimuli.

It takes almost shouting sometimes to get her attention (like calling her name 4+ times before it registers with her if she's in the middle of something), she has been saying "what?" a lot more often, and yesterday she asked me to turn up Mr. Rogers on TV bc it was too quiet (it was at a pretty normal volume to me). That last bit was the thing that concerned me.

I didn't really think of it to be a hearing issue until yesterday, because DH has sort of a "block everything out" trait (whereas I get distracted at the drop of a hat and immediately drop everything when someone is trying to get my attention). She has great speech and is ahead of a lot of others in her age group, but these recent behaviors kind of make me nervous.

I just don't want to go a long time before addressing an issue if there is one - I didn't get glasses until 5th grade and probably should have had them years earlier. Just wondering if this is typical behavior or cause for concern, or if all 3 year olds basically ignore you lol

Also, if this doesn't seem normal, would you bring them to their pediatrician for an evaluation or is there another route to take? I'm assuming the ped would evaluate it and refer her to an audiologist or ENT or something if they thought it was cause for concern.
