DH said the long version of WTF when he got DS1 up from a nap and found that he had done some poop smearing. So, DS1 started saying it as well. All of the time. The thing is, he only says it around DH now b/c he gets a reaction from him. DH will laugh or at least try not to and tell him that we don't say that word. I honestly ignore it. Since he doesn't get a reaction from me, he stopped saying it. It's so tough keeping a straight face though!!!

@rachiecakes: This is a nicer thing than my DD does if she hears us use it she will say "Mommy we don't say shit, shit is a bad word!" haha and will continue to tell us what a bad word shit is...saying it over and over.

I did tell her that we should use "shoot" instead and that has worked although I'm still not a fan of how close it is to the bad word.

@LuLu Mom: we offer another word.

DD was saying Dammit all the time - I told her that wasn't a nice word and we should come up with a new word to use when you are frustrated! I gave her suggestions like "Macaroni!" or " Bubble gum"!

One day she was sitting there ans said "Dammit" then looked at me and said 'I mean Mackeral!" And then it stuck.

It cracks me up now when I hear her in the other room saying "Mackeral!"

She is 4.5

Well. Once, we nearly ran over a dog on my mother in law's street, and we missed it and my husband said "fucking dog!" (He rarely swears). And she said "where's the fucking dog?" All we could do was laugh. Now every time I drive down that street I hear her say it in my head.

Otherwise I just point blank tell her that's not a word for kids to use. Only grown ups. She pretty much stops saying whatever then.

That was J's first curse word, too. haha

He knows what words are bad words and not to say them. If he hears me say it, he'll say, "no mama, that's a bad word. say "oh shoot" instead".

It happens to most parents, the first time your child uses a swear word and the mortified feeling that comes with it! My toddler has been saying "shit" and we are trying to stop her but just yelling just encourages it more. We've really cleaned up our language but slip ups happen. What do you do when you hear your child swear?
