The liquid antacids work way better than the chewables, in my experience. I swig the Rolaids liquid and it usually settles me for a while. The doctor recommended liquid Maalox as being effective. Also stop eating meals and just snack all day long (this was really hard for me but it made a huge difference). I also cut out anything acidic - citrus, berries, juice, coffee, tea, soda - and just ate plain fruits like bananas and apples.

If none of that works, my friend was on Zantac the whole time because her heartburn wouldn't go away and she has a healthy baby boy.

I always try tums first but take Zantac 75 if it doesn't get better. Last pregnancy I did the same but had to use Zantac 150 the last few weeks. I'm 37 weeks (OMG!) so I feel lucky that the 75 is still working! Don't feel bad about taking something approved by your dr, heart burn is such misery.

No real advice because tums was enough for me, but just wanted to say hang in there! The good news is it will go away likely as soon as you have the baby.

@twodoghouse: On the upside, they say that if you get heartburn during your pregnancy your baby will have lots of hair! It was true for me. No heartburn with my first and he didn't have lots of hair and heartburn with my second and he has tons of hair. ;)

@twodoghouse: I'm so sorry, it really sucks. I had it my entire pregnancy and it was just horrendous at the end. What I did was take extra strength Zantac twice a day and to keep me topped up between doses I would drink Gaviscon neat from the bottle, ha ha. I also had a few sachets of it for my handbag. Advice the doctor gave me: Don't drink anything within 20 minutes of eating, if you eat something acidic (like citrus fruit) eat some protein to balance it, like cheese. I used to have to sleep propped up too. I have forgotten most of the advice I had but will see if I wrote it down anywhere and post it later if I've still got it. Hope you feel better soon!

My OB told me that if I felt that Tums wasn't enough then he could prescribe something stronger. I hope you feel better soon! Being pregnant is tough enough and adding heartburn just sucks. I had it all throughout my second pregnancy so I know how you feel. Luckily, I was able to tough through some of the harder days and didn't have to go in for a prescription. Mine probably wasn't has bad as yours though. Hope you find relief soon!

Definitely worth a call in to your doc since you have worked so hard to get where you are.

After Tums stopped working, my doc ok'ed Zantac first, it didn't work, so then he ok'ed Prilosec, which is about the only thing that works for me for both pregnancies from late in the first tri (Son #1 has turned out just fine! Jury is still out on #2 since he is still cooking)

I literally can't function without the Prilosec, doesn't matter what I eat or drink or avoid, otherwise I just can't eat food period. It also helps if I stop eating after 8pm and sleep inclined, especially in the third tri.

I have had pretty bad heartburn since about 23-24 weeks. I started with Pepcid (for about a week) but it didn't really help. I have been on Prevacid for about 10 weeks and it worked great until I hit about 33 weeks. Everything seems to give me heartburn now, including drinking water. I would ask your doctor if you can try Pepcid or Prevacid (apparently you can take these combined if it doesn't get any better, but it's always best to start with the lowest dose necessary!). I use the OTC stuff because my insurance won't cover perscriptions since they are avaliable OTC.

My heartburn did aggravate my asthma (like @Mamasig mentioned) and I actually woke up several times with heartburn feeling like I couldn't get good/deep breaths. Even though my heartburn is bad again, I haven't had the issues with breathing that I did before starting medicines.

Hopefully your doctor can tell you something to take soon...It is really miserable!

My allergy doctor actually gave me a prescription for Zantac when I was pregnant (comes out cheaper than buying over the counter). Apparently, heartburn can worsen your asthma. It did help some.

Seconding Zantac. Tums and Pepcid were the first things recommended by my doctors, but they were worthless to me. Now I take extra strength Zantac once or twice a day (2x is the limit) and it makes a big differences for me. I sometimes still wake up with heartburn in the middle of the night, and I definitely still get the acid taste in my mouth, but overall things are much improved.

There is nothing non-medication that I tried that made the least bit of difference for me, so I hear you on that.

I have acid reflux, so I've been on heartburn medication for my entire pregnancy. Up until about 20 weeks, I could get away with my normal Zantac, but then it stopped working. My OB said that Prilosec was also safe, so that's what I'm on now. It has helped a LOT. You can get both over the counter, so it may be worth a call to your OB to see if you can pick some up and try it?

Feel better! Heartburn is the worst.

ETA: propping your pillow up might also help, too, but it wasn't enough for me. I hope you can get some relief!

I have an appointment next week, so I'll be asking my doctor about this. In the meantime I just wanted to see if anyone had advice and/or wants to commiserate with me about heartburn.

I've been dealing with heartburn since I was about 14 weeks, but just recently (I'm 26 weeks now) it has become unbearable. I can't eat anything without having really bad heartburn now. I've been staying away from anything spicy, fried or greasy, but that's not really making a difference. I'm supposed to be drinking a gallon of water a day but water just makes it worse. I make sure not to lay down after eating because I read that will make it worse, but sitting up doesn't help either. I think the problem is actually baby placement and less about food, because one of the babies is way up under my ribs and has been the whole time.

My container of extra strength Tums says not to exceed more than 10 in a 24 hour period, but I'm sure some days I have way more than 10. I can't go anywhere without my Tums either. Some nights I curl up on the couch and clutch my Tums container like it's a teddy bear. My husband says he's going to buy stock in the things because I'm probably keeping the whole company in business.

I'm just wondering if anyone has found anything that brings relief? Are there prescription strength Tums I can take?? Or some other pregnancy-safe medicines that might work better than Tums? Obviously the Tums and I are close, but I'm willing to forsake them for some real relief!
