I had horrible reflux when I was pregnant. I could have cereal for dinner and would wake up about an hour after going to sleep and throw up from the acid creep. The best thing I did for my second pregnancy was look up natural remedies. On the list was to eat a red delicious apple. Really?! I thought there is no harm in trying that. And it worked. I could eat anything (seriously) and have a red delicious apple and sleep like a baby. I did have acid reflux during the day as well, but I managed through that. It was the throwing up that was killing me, so I usually only ate the Apple once a day, in the evening between dinner and bedtime. I know it sounds crazy, but I didn’t take any meds and the Apple worked. I imagine it can’t work for everyone, or the drug companies would be out of business. However, I have passed this recommendation on a few times and it worked for others as well.

For my second c section, the hospital gave me something to neutralize stomach contents, but it gave me heartburn and I thought I would throw up laying flat in my back in the OR. I could 100% feel the heartburn completely dissappear when they pulled the baby out! I add that detail because I couldn’t eat anything else before the operation, so it was proof that the apple had been fixing my acid reflux all along.

Prilosec 100%. I had horrible GERD this pregnancy. Like around 10 weeks (I think) my voice actually got raspy and my esophagus was so raw from the acid, even swallowing a small gulp of water felt like glass shards. I started Prilosec and it was life changing. I was able to come off of it for most of 2nd tri but a couple of weeks ago (32 weeks) I had to go back on because I was pretty miserable. I’m now feeling great and haven’t had heartburn since.

I tried all the other stuff first (tums, Zantac, etc) and it was laughable. Did nothing.

I will say that the ONE thing that has helped with heartburn (if that’s all you’re experiencing, mine was way worse than just heartburn) is warm milk and honey. One night I was sobbing from heartburn, it felt like I was having a heart attack for 2 hours. I was so desperate and read warm milk and honey sipped slowly. So I tried it and it actually did work. Tried 2 more times and one time worked and one didn’t. So, it’s worth a shot. And it tastes nice.

@bhbee: I have severe preexisting GERD, which got much worse in pregnancy. My first pregnancy, my doctor asked me to try just taking Zantac morning and night, but that wasn't cutting it before long so then we went to nexium and reglan. I was also on zofran and doclegis is for severe nausea so I was pretty drugged up and my kids are A-ok. I was just trying to survive.

Now I'm on Dexilant and it's the best acid medication I've ever been on. Even my last endoscopy showed less gastritis than in years past, so it really works.

I saw somewhere that lemons help neutralize the acid so I drank a lot of lemon water while pregnant with my daughter and I actually thought it helped. I bought lemons in huge bags from Costco.

@bhbee: yeah otc. I buy it at Costco. I’d say it eliminated 90% of my symptoms. I’d only have symptoms if I totally overate or ate a TON of stuff I knew would piss my stomach off.

Zantac can be taken twice a day. I take it at night, and one during the day if needed.

Too many tums can make things worse, so try to limit them. I usually only take one or two if my reflux is really bad at bedtime.

Try to avoid sugar, it makes it worse. So will most mints. And too much water on an empty stomach. Try milk. Sometimes it helps

I have terrible reflux during pregnancy. It is hands down my worst symptom. (Two pregnancies). The only, I repeat, only thing that works is nexium. I took it my entire second pregnancy and the last tri of my first pregnancy (I didn’t wise up soon enough). Upside: lotsa hair both babies

@gingerbebe: that’s helpful thanks! I didn’t think about the gas adding to it but makes a lot of sense. Sadly I love beans. I haven’t eaten a salad in like two months ... guess I need to find some non irritating dressings (my go tos are spicy or vinegary, of course). This is going to be a very cranky 6 months :silly:

@bhbee: Yeah, I dealt with reflux and heartburn during pregnancy, but my husband suffers from GERD on the regular and it was helpful in knowing how to manage my own issues. If he eats anything too fibrous or anything that creates gas in his system it pushes stuff up into his esophagus. Basically, all the vegetable matter is fermenting in his system and pushing it upwards to reflux. Large amounts of watery fiber seems to particularly give him trouble, like melons and cucumber.

Probiotic foods, lactofermented foods, things that help your gut are good, but we generally keep his vegetable intake limited to small amounts of fresh vegetables, and predominantly cooked vegetables that aren't super irritating. He eats limited crucifers and eats more things like soft COOKED squash (butternut, zucchini, yellow squash, spaghetti squash, kabocha squash), green beans, carrots, greens, and peas. He eats small quantities of beans and we generally don't give him a HUGE amount of vegetables per meal - its more like 1/2 cup to 1 cup at most.

He does eat big entree salads from time to time, but he knows he runs the risk of refluxing if he does and sometimes it causes a problem, sometimes it doesn't. We also limit his spicy food and tomato based food to where if I know we're having spaghetti one night, I make sure we have blander non-triggering foods the other meals of that day and for the day before and after. And we switched to half-caff coffee and he adds almond creamer to his coffee (even though he prefers black) to lower the acidity of his morning cup.

@gingerbebe: is fiber a trigger? I didn’t know that one and I tend to try to eat a lot of it, although I’m still just eating whatever I can at this stage. I’ve definitely cut a ton out which makes me super sad. I love sour and spicy/spiced foods, black pepper, etc and it’s all off limits.

I took prevacid once a day from 14 weeks until I delivered and I could tell if I missed a dose. I also gave up several foods and slept on a pretty severe angle.

@bhbee: I’m on week 16 and my OB just prescribed Prevacid for once a day. It is a game changer. I went from constant burning from noon-middle of the night to it being gone. I took it with my son’s pregnancy and it was totally fine, so I think it’s worth it. I love that I’m finally able to eat pain-free!

Prilosec. Cut coffee, chocolate, anything acidic like tomatoes, teas, citrus, sodas, and try reducing anything fibrous in your diet. Very bland foods like chicken and rice and bread.

I’m currently pregnant with #2 and have been taking Prilosec every morning since the 2nd tri because the heartburn/reflux has been awful since the beginning. I got by with Tums and Zantac at first but it was making me miserable. Even with the Prilosec I have cut a lot of foods from my diet to keep it under control. My OB was fine with anything over the counter but maybe check with yours!

I’m only 13 weeks with #3 and this time the acid is killer already, has been for weeks. I tried lots of tums, then Pepcid complete, not doing it, then I remembered I took Prevacid last time. That made a big difference but it doesn’t last long enough. If I take it when I get up I have a good morning but by after lunch the stomach pain is so strong. I force down something bland and some milk at bedtime and then I sleep ok but it’s ruining half my day.

Has anyone taken Prevacid more often? Should I be asking for rx stuff? What worked for you?
