We just went to a 1st b-day party yesterday. It was just family and close friends. They had cupcakes for us adults and a homemade cake for the birthday boy to smash (which was hilarious - he LOVED the icing!) No theme or major decor. Just some balloons and streamers and a tablecloth in a blue/green color scheme.

@Alexandra603: I made this banana cake but with homdmade cream cheese frosting instead:
http://www.hellobee.com/2013/04/29/diy-healthy-smash-cake/

you could just make or buy cupcakes, that would still be cute but a lot easier

We just had our families and kept the menu simple with hot dogs, chips, salad, & fruit. I made cupcakes from a mix. And when we gave one to LO he would not even touch it! Glad I didn't do a fancy smash cake! ;) I printed out his monthly pics and made a banner with them which is still hanging up a month later because I love seeing it every day. Lol

My daughters's first birthday party was a few months ago. I made a carrot cake (with applesauce and coconut oil) I made a normal size one and then also made a little one, in a mini loaf pan, just for her. I just frosted the top for a "naked" look, because I'm not very good at frosting, and that way the simpleness looked intentional. I got a cute cake topper and I thought it turned out really nice. My guests said it tasted really good and my daughter didn't eat that much of her cake so I'm really glad that I didn't give her a full size cake or pay for a fancy smash cake. And I still got nice pictures of her trying to eat the little cake.I also made chocolate cupcakes from a box in case my guests didn't want carrot cake. All in all it was really easy and nice.

@Alexandra603: I didn't go too crazy with the first party. I'm one of those people that feel like they aren't going to remember this, nor do they care at this age so I'm not going to break the bank.
I had close friends and family over. We had a big cook out and just enjoyed watching DS play with his gifts. He had just learned to walk so we had the sprinklers on outside and we blew bubbles at him. For the decorations, I decided against any real theme (again, because he was too young to really have an opinion). Instead I went with colors. I hung blue, green, yellow and red balloons from the ceiling with streamers. I color coordinated the plates and silverware. For the cake, I just baked a regular recipe and I covered it with chocolate frosting and put a couple of little construction trucks on it. He really likes trucks! No separate smash cake for me since they don't really eat it anyway. I just cut him a big piece and let him go to town while we all mingled around him and took photos. In my opinion, it was low key but I got a lot out of the party. We celebrated his first year of life with friends and good times without too much fluff.

We are having my daughter's 1st birthday this weekend! I'm at a loss for what to do for the cake. What did you do? Do you have a recipe for a cute smash cake? I'm so terrible at icing and decorating cakes. Did you have a cake or cupcakes for your guests? I'd love to do something a little memorable since it's her first birthday but my skills (and time) are very limited. Thanks!
