There are some great suggestions here that I'm going to have to look into! I thought about a Citrus Lane subscription but then I feel like I need to get the older brother one too.

The thing is I don't know them that well. The father was my neighbor growing up and he is around 10 years to my senior...so while I know him I don't know them, kwim? I think I've seen thus baby maybe twice! It makes knowing what to get and what's appropriate even harder...

How about a credit or GC to a zoo membership, or childrens museum/science museum etc. I would love that personally! Or even just day tickets - that's cheaper.

Oh what about a GC to a fun etsy shop - like the really cool natural woodworking ones, or specialty organic baby items?

Agree with @Baby Boy Mom and @MerryC on books!

Or you could make a photobook of your whole family doing something fun... kids that age love looking at pictures of people they know!

I always prefer to give books. They grow with kids so well. If I can, I try to find ones with special themes catered to the family. Like a book with 2 brothers, or sisters, or a family that lives at the beach, or in the country, or has a certain heritage, or a character named the same as one of the kids. That kind of thing.

But I also like honeybee's idea to give an activity! A children's museum would be another place I would love.

I really think you can never have too many books. I also like the bath crayons idea: LO was gifted some and loves them at 18 months.

@plaidpants: I like that idea too! We had people donate to March of Dimes instead of buy us gifts.

I know this isn't for everyone, but I think making a donation in the child's name is a really nice idea, especially when it seems like the kid already has a million toys and they are too little to expect anything.

We've been donating to Oxfam because they have a neat thing where depending on the amount, you are donating to something specific that is needed, like books for kids, honey bees, a garden, etc.: http://www.oxfamamericaunwrapped.com/unique-gifts.

My mom made a good point this weekend that she tried to always give "disposable gifts". Meaning something you use and then can throw away. Something like coloring books, baking kits, etc. I thought it was a great idea because we all know how much we hate clutter!

For the 3 year old birthday party I just went to, I gave her a little wellness kit of lotion, bandaids, and hand sanitizer.

I actually just bought a gift for a 1 year old bday party :)
I bought bathtub crayons and a bath-related/waterproof book.

LO has this bath crayon thing and loves it: http://www.amazon.com/Alex-Toys-Kids-Bath-Crayons/dp/B000ICNZR0/ref=pd_ybh_3

And I got this book: http://www.amazon.com/Bath-Time-Sandra-Boynton/dp/076114708X/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_y

Together they're about $18. Your friends may not really need any more books, but this one is kind of a niche thing, and I feel like even if they did have bath crayons, it's something that eventually runs out, and also doesn't take up much space in the house.

How about a subscription to Highlights Hello (it's the 0-2 year old version of Highlights Magazine)?

My sister gifted the toddler version to my daughter for Christmas this year (High Five is the magazine, she's 27 months old now) and she LOVES it! It's really cute and comes monthly.

http://www.highlights.com/landing/highlights-hello-magazine-for-kids-test-b?utm_expid=34107112-4&utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.highlights.com%2Fhighlights-magazines-for-kids

Edited to Add: a year long subscription is $35, but there's a code for $5 off, making it $30 for the year. The code is x2jxatb5 if you are interested.

I agree with the experience gift, but also, do the parents have a savings account set up for him yet? I've had lots of friends who've hinted about preferring money for their LO's savings or college account than more toys. My son is 9 months and I'm already dreading the explosion of 1st birthday toys that are bound to come.

I don't have a lot of good toy suggestions, but maybe an 'experience' gift would be cool? Like tickets to a fun kids museum or something like that.

I need help coming up with a first birthday gift for a boy who is turning one and has everything! Looking for something different and would like to stay under ~$25.

He has an older brother (5) so also has his toys, plus combined they have every toy under the sun. I was thinking the Tomy Hide n Squeek Eggs and a board book but I don't know if that is enough considering they have big/loud toys. When DS turned 1 they gifted him LeapFrog Fridge Phonics, but I know they already have toys like that. Any other ideas?! Thanks!
