Keep an eye out for blood in her stool. My son was a very uncomfortable baby when he was that young and never wanted to be put down. We discovered that he had a milk protein intolerance. Once I eliminated all dairy from my diet, he was a different baby.

@Pumpkin Pie: sounds like reflux to me. DS stopped sleeping on his own around 5 weeks. It doesn't show up right away.

@Pumpkin Pie: sounds like silunt reflux to me too, DS was always spitting up and throwing up after he ate, even in his sleep 😞. A big sign to look for is if she starts screaming or crying right after spitting up, that usually a sign that it's hurting, also just listening for signs of her throwing up in her mouth and then reswallowing it. DS would scream and cry and it wasn't until I realized that he was having heartburn, and for him on nexium things turned around.

Holy smokes! She has been napping in her crib for 45 mins now. This is the first time ever!

I don't know how it happened. I don't think I did anything differently.

ETA: I do want to explore the reflux and MSPI possibilities. She spits up every time she eats and when she is at the breast, will often cough, or do a choking sound type of thing.

@FaithFertility: @Pumpkin Pie: I was going to say this - be consistent. I had a huge reply and lost it!
But from personal experience and the experience of a good friend, just keep trying. Have a solid nap and bedtime routine (yes, this early) and keep trying to put her down in one designated sleep spot (crib, bassinet, etc)
It may seem maddening because it will take a while. But if persistent and consistent she will eventually learn "this is my spot. This is where I sleep".
A very good friend was holding baby all night long but every time she'd finish feeding at night or at nap time during the day she would try the bassinet. Slowly the reaction became less and less and then one day - she put her down in it and she slept!!! And It stuck. She was so glad she went through the motions. If you don't introduce it over and over she will never know it even exists let alone want to sleep anywhere other than your arms.

Good luck! xo

@pumpkin pie: sorry, mama! that sounds really rough. i'd probably schedule an LC appt (like others said, to make sure she is truly getting enough milk...but it seems like she is based on weight gain and eliminating)...and try to rule out the silent reflux symptoms myself. assuming all of that is ok, just do what you need to to get through the phase! carriers, letting her sleep on you day & night, co-sleeping, bottles of wine, whatever!

if it's nothing medical, i'm guessing she just finally "woke up" after having a sleepy first month :(

hang in there, mama!

@Pumpkin Pie: Yep :) maybe around 8 weeks it just got better and better.....
I just did the "routine" nightly or continued to try to put him down, even if it was for 1 nap a day.
He found his thumb around 8 weeks and I think that is a HUGE help! He LOVES that thing...lol

Although he had a horrible night last night, but he has a cold!!! :(

@Pumpkin Pie: my DD had silent reflux. She would spit up any time that there was even a little pressure on her tummy. But the thing that told us it was silent reflux was when she was lying down we would hear her gagging choking on her spit up. And she was happiest being held upright which is why I ended up wearing her so much

@Pumpkin Pie: both my boys were absolutely the worst during their 2nd month. They both had colic and reflux. Prilosec and a bland diet (no caffeine acidic food dairy crucifers and soy) really helped us. As soon as the Prilosec kicked in DS2 went from sleeping 45 minutes stretches to 10 hours, no joke.

@Pumpkin Pie: Please go see a LC and do a weighed feed to see how much she is actually transferring. My DD did the exact same thing and one of the things we figured out was that she was a lazy nurser so she would spend 45 minutes nursing but only transfer 1oz! She was also very colicky and has terrible silent reflux so she preferred to be held and would wake as soon as she was put down. She responded well to the KTan too and I ended up wearing her a ton. Also try white noise and a really tight swaddle ❤️ I know how hard this can be

@Pumpkin Pie: LOs MSPI didn't show up until 6 weeks. It was at 3 months we finally figured out what it was. His first symptoms were vomiting at night and then slimy (mucous filled poops). He was also always, always cranky. Cutting out gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, and peanuts made him an extremely happy baby that never spits up.

I'm breastfeeding so, I don't know how much she takes. But, I don't really think she feeds well. Even after nursing 30 mins, my breasts don't feel empty. Though she is gaining a good amount of weight. Her poops are watery and yellow.

How do you know if the baby has reflux or MSPI? I would wear her, even wearing her doesn't calm her some times. When I hold her, I have to adjust multiple times, rocking, swaying, walking, holding vertical, holding horizontal, etc.

ETA: This all started when she turned 1 month, so I don't know that it could be MSPI or reflux.

I feel for you  DS would not let me put him down until he was 5 months old, even at night. But I second the questions about colic and MSPI, and or reflux? DS was all 3 and I believe that caused a lot of his sleeping problems for a long time. I tried wearing him but he didn't like that either unfortunitly, so I just counted down the days till I could set him down. Hang in there, your doing great mama!

LO is like this. Get a baby Ktan and a Tula. Wear her all the time. She'll be happy and secure and you'll have free hands. The carrier was my savior.

Also, how are you feeding? What do her poops look like? We were MSPI + egg allergy and that caused a ton of sleeping problems

I second baby wearing! It was so helpful in those dark early days. Does she feed ok? Maybe she's gassy and uncomfortable? Colic? (Don't need to be annoying, just throwing things out there).
I would just hold her as much as you need to/are able to. When my LO refused to nap except when held, we still did the whole routine in hopes that it would actually become a routine ...
It's most certainly a phase and I hope it's a short one!!

@FaithFertility: do you mean your magic baby sleeper was like this?!?!? What did you do, and when did it change for you?

DD2 has only slept a total of maybe 1 hour today?? :bummed: She has been like this for about a week now - since she turned 1 month old.

DD2 also cries so much sometimes even when we hold her. I don't know why!!

DS was like that and we co slept in the beginning. With DD we were more successful getting her to sleep in her own. Not sure if we really learned anything or if she was naturally easier.

For us a tight swaddle, white noise, then I'd nurse her to sleep and wait until she'd been down a while and transfer to the RNP.

@Pumpkin Pie: For us what worked was taking a more RIE approach (which is something you can google if you are interested.) But there is no one right way, you're not doing anything wrong, and no phase lasts forever! With my first, she only napped in the swing for the first few months- not consistently even in the car or being worn or in my arms or on a plane or in the stroller. The swing, only. But I'd still recommend that swing, it was a lifesaver.

DD2 is 5 weeks old now and she never ever wants to be put down. Yesterday she only slept a couple hours total during the day. Night time sleep was a little better because we got 1 3 hour stretch in the pack n play.

I thought DD2 would be different from DD1 since we knew better and tried to set up good habits from the start.

I'm flipping through all the baby books we have, but I just don't know how to get her to sleep on her own, and for longer. She cries every time we put her down.

I just need some encouragement, words of wisdom, advice, etc. I'm really hoping this is a phase, but I just feel like I'm doing something wrong and I don't know what!
