@looch: Ok! Fresh turkey, thermometer. How long do they take? Like, do I start that morning? I need to know the math.

I think your best bet is getting a fresh turkey at a butcher shop. Ask them to make it oven ready, in a foil baking pan.

You need a meat thermometer and from them on it is just math. Turkeys are cooked in increments of time per pound.

Is there a restaurant doing take out turkeys? I know you want to learn but I eat meat and I make my DH do the turkey because it is so gross. Pulling out the giblets and stuff is just icky!

@Arden: my advice is to practice with a cheap whole chicken this week. Use the same spices and instructions, although you will probably not need to cook it in the oven as long.

The easiest preparation I know is Turkey in a Bag kit.

Oh man, I tried to do this a few years ago and it was a major failure! Even though I have had to become un-vegetarian, raw meat is not for me. Honestly, if/when I have to host thanksgiving again I will order one from a grocery store or something.

I'm vegetarian and tried to cook a turkey last year and failed miserably. I didnt realize it took several days to thaw!
I read that you wanted to learn, but honestly I'd suggest getting a pre-cooked one from whole foods/etc.....similar prices and less hassle.

Just do a turkey breast! They're easier and MORE delicious, IMO. No different than a whole turkey, honestly. Just faster. Brine it, bake it for 45 min, done and DONE!

You are a BRAVE lady!

I'm vegetarian, but I've cooked a few things for DH (chicken breasts, sausage). *shiver*
I'm always afraid of messing it up because I can't taste the finished product.

I kind of really want to do a whole bird (a small one) just because I want to learn.
We're vegetarian but we still want to be good hosts to other people so I feel like I should have some basic meat dishes under my belt.

You could totally do just a turkey breast, even in a slow cooker!

If you want to do a whole bird, as long as you stick with a smaller bird it's really not that tough. Just kinda gross since you're handling a whole raw bird. I've used simple recipes from allrecipes that just have you throw some apples/carrots/ etc inside the body cavity, some herbs in the water under the roasting rack, and putting butter under the skin (that is a REALLY gross part). But the first time I did a turkey, it was so easy that I did one again for Christmas less than a month later! Very simple way to prepare a lot of meat at once. Just takes a long time and takes up your oven so everything else needs to be stove-top.

I second the suggestion of doing just the breast or a half turkey instead of the whole thing. It would be much easier!!

Someone posted a thread with a link to some great basics on it a few days ago!

http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/cooking-thanksgiving

It's not super complicated, but it does get a little messy. I would just start with a clean kitchen so you can clean up after the raw bird before you prepare anything else!

You'll be great :)

@Arden: fair warning, it's gross. We cooked one for a party we hosted a few years ago and I almost puked.

Probably not the advice you wanted.. I'm thankful that my husband handled it.

You couldn't pay me to stuff the bird.

Hi. I'm a lifelong vegetarian that has never ever handled meat.

I invited my grandparents over to our house for Thanksgiving, because they're getting really frail and hosting is hard for them. Obviously, they will want to eat turkey. Problem is: I've never cooked a turkey, or any other meat.

So... help me? Do you have any great links to provide? I don't have any idea what I'm getting into here.
