@Kulala: my baby (2 weeks old) also has some reflux and cannot be laid flat on her back for at least 30 minutes. I use her Boppy pillow to raise her up a bit. She sleeps just fine in it. But I never let her sleep in it for longer than 2-3 hours at a time without taking her out for a bit. I know there are SIDS risk even with what I am doing but i keep a close watch on her.

I encourage you to do what you feel comfortable trying and what works for your baby.

@Kulala: We made a little nest by rolling a towel into a "u" shape and putting it under the sheet - sort of below her butt and only up to her shoulders. I didn't worry about suffocation because it was under a tight sheet and didn't come anywhere near her head. That made for a great transition from the rock n'play to the crib. After a few days I was able to remove it. We then switched to the Merlin suit mentioned above when she outgrew the swaddle.

@travellingbee: thanks for the advice. I was debating to use pillow and towels or not and understand the risk. My girl refuses to sleep in a flat open surface. So I thought to use something to elevate her head plus some towels to surround her to make her feel the space less open. I only do it during the day when I can always monitor her.

Any suggestions to replace the towels? Many thanks!

Agree with @travellingbee: the drowsy but awake process sounds great. But I would remove the pillows and blankets right away due to risk of SIDS. Instead, I would recommend the Merlin Magic Sleep Suit. I love it! It is perfect when babies still need to feel snuggled (and muffle a startle reflex) but are breaking out of the swaddle.

The drowsy but awake part sounds fine but I caution you against putting towels and pillows in the bed. That's very dangerous. You can elevate the head of the mattress by putting something under the mattress rather than baby. A pillow and towels are huge suffocation risks.

@cam: Hi CAM, how long did it take you to successfully put him down awake? Did you use any special "training" approach?

Sounds like you and baby girl are doing great! I don't think I started putting my DS down awake (or anyehere close to it) until over 3 months. At 8 weeks u don't think you need to worry too much about bad habits but if she is doing it on her own then bonus!

@NovBaby1112: Thanks a lot for your encouragement! I find it so challenging to get her fall asleep on her own. If I put her down totally awake then within a few minutes she starts to cry non-stop. Right now, on a scale of 1-10 (10 being asleep and 1 is totally awake), I'm working on putting her down when she is 5 or 6.

Hopefully it won't be long before she can fall asleep completely on her own!

@Kulala: I think what you are doing sounds great!! It will be a gradual transition for your LO and easier on her too. I think that counts as drowsy but awake, and you can keep working towards reducing the amount of time rocking her each week to get her to fall asleep while she is even more awake.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a first time mom and have a 8-week old baby girl. Since she was born, she has been always sleeping in a swing plus my hubby and have been rocking her to sleep.

I know that rocking her to sleep is a bad sleep association, so about 1-2 weeks ago, I wanted to reduce the amount of rocking. Currently I try to put her down to sleep as soon as her eyes are closed (on average it takes about 5-10 min). Most of the time when she is in the bed, her eyes are still either half open or completely open for 10-20 seconds. People have been saying that "put a baby to sleep when she is drowsy but awake". Does my approach count as "drowsy and awake".

Also I have tried to transition her from her swing to crib during daytime. Our family doctor thinks my baby has acid reflux and we are waiting to see a pediatrician to confirm. But in the meantime, I elevate the bed a bit by putting a pillow under her head and roll up a towel to a u-shape and put it under her bump, plus putting some towels around her to make her feel snuggled. Today is the second day of the transition and she has been sleeping well during the day. My plan to eventually remove the towels and the pillow. Is it a good way to help her transition to the crib?

Thanks :)
