Argh, hated this stage. We had just got into a groove after CIO and then this happened. Did whatever we could to get her to sleep/"sleep" until a normal waking hour and it eventually passed!

Aww, crap. She woke up and I caved and got her. She only nursed for a few minutes then fell back asleep - now I have to transfer her!

My LO is 8 months and has been doing this.
I let him cry for 5 min. 50% of the time he falls back asleep, if not, I let him sleep the rest of the night with me.

We are going through this same issue :( she is up crying always at 4 but after 10 minutes or so of crying she can usually (but not always) put herself back down but she is up again between 4:30 and 5am. It's driving me crazy. Hopefully she will transition out of this "phase."

Ah! My LO is doing this, too! He's 6.5 months. I've just been nursing him back to sleep, but it's been wearing on my patience. I'm really glad to know that it's a common thing; I'll start cutting him a little slack.

Mine did this for a long time - eventually we did a mild CIO and he dropped it (and became a 5:45 am early riser). I wouldn't rush it....let it continue as long as you can sustain the sleep deprivation on your end.

My LO is 8.5 months and has been doing the same thing for 1-2 months now... up most morning between 4-5am to nurse, back down until 7-7:45. Recently she started also waking up 1x between 10:30-12:30. Aghhhh! I let her CIO at 10:30 pm the other day... she cried for about 10-15 min (but not hysterically) and then went back to sleep... I wish I could remember whether she still got up at 5am that morning... there was one morning this week where she didn't wake up and it may have been the same night I had her CIO in the evening... I'm kind of over 2x wake ups, so I'm going to continue to have her CIO for the first time she gets up... at the 5am wake up, she may actually be hungry (and is sometimes wet)... so I'm not sure what to do about that..

@Rubies: I agree. When my LO wakes between 4 and 5, I usually have DH bring her to bed and I nurse her and sleep with her a little longer (if possible). Every once in a while she will sleep through it (like last night!), so I figure we will get there in time.

My LO is 11.5 months. :)

Thanks, ladies.

@mrsf: I'm pretty sure DS is not hungry, he's just gotten in the (bad) habit of expecting milk at that time. He's gone 12+ hours without eating many times, so I know he can do it!

@rubies: I think I remember @mrs.bee posting about the 4am sleep cycle shift. Glad to know your DD eventually dropped the feed on her own; maybe DS will do that - and soon!

I have learned/read that there is a strong shift in sleep at around 4am. Before DD slept 12+ hours straight, the 4am wakeup was the last to go. What you're doing (nursing and then him sleeping again for another hour or so) is very much what happened to us. Eventually she dropped it on her own.

We never had to do major CIO, but once we saw that M could STTN without eating we would let her fuss for a little while if she woke up before 6. If she was really crazy I would comfort her but not feed her. It seemed like she was just starting to expect that milk even though she wasn't hungry.

DS is 7.5 months. Two months ago we sleep trained and for awhile DS was STTN from about 7pm-6am. Life was awesome. A few weeks ago DS started waking between 4 and 5am and not going back to sleep. I nurse him (probably starting a bad habit) and he falls back to sleep right away, waking about 1.5-2 hours later. Life is still good, but I'd love to eliminate this 4am feed. How do I do it? CIO? Anyone have tips or specific advice? Much appreciated ...
