Every time I tried to put LOs costume on at home she cried and pulled at it and just sat and had a hissy fit. But we went to a Halloween event last weekend and I put most of the costume on when we got there and she loved it! Didn't care at all. I was so thankful. Could you have her help pick out something she likes to put on the skirt to make it pretty to her? Anyway could could try to put it on and go outside or put it in while outside?

What about finding some poodle skirt video/cartoons on YouTube or something? I don't even know if they exist, but it might make her a little more excited about it

@HappyBaker: I'm going to try again tonight and maybe before leaving daycare I'll ask the other kids what they are going to be, and see if that helps! And worse comes to worse she will be Princess Sofia ;)

DD is 25 months and feels the same way about dressing up! This year we have totally talked up her costume (a dinosaur) and how fun it will be to wear it. She still wanted nothing to do with it.

What finally worked (last night) was to talk about what her friends are dressing up as / how fun it will be to walk around with them, and having her put the costume on in front of a full length mirror - she immediately "roared" and loved it then!

@LuLu Mom: I had this problem last year with my 1.5 year old. She haaaaated the cape I made for her. She would wear the backup costume I had, though. Then something switched in her mind that night and she let me put her Red Riding Hood costume. I had to let her decide it was her decision...

Also, she said it was ugly!! Ew! I'm so glad my lo hasn't learned that word yet!

It's just a costume, I wouldn't force the issue. I'd give her the choice of the costume or one of her princess dresses that you already have.

my son was annoyed with his costume at first but we started practice trick or treating and i told him he could have a piece of sweet if he put on his costume. At first he would only keep it on for a few minutes but now he is more comfortable. He now asks to put it on and trick or treat regularly.

This happened to us, too. Daycare got her to wear it for their parade, no problem! We didn't go trick or treating so that was good enough.

Sometimes when the kids don't want to wear something, I say, "Good, because you're not allowed to wear that!" Haha it works more often than not... well on one of my kids. The other one is immune to my attempts at Jedi mind tricks.

@looch: No, when I was preparing she really didn't get the concept of dressing up (still doesn't.) I asked her what she wanted to be yesterday if not that and she said "nothing I want candy." I explained no trick or treating without a costume. I will be sending it to daycare, they can usually get her do things I can't.

Did she ask to be that costume for Halloween? When does she need to wear it?

Last year, my son asked to be Jake, so I go out and get the costume from the Disney Store, I thought I was so prepared. Come the morning of the daycare party, he wanted nothing to do with it. So, I packed it up and sent it to daycare. The teacher was able to convince him to put the shirt on. So, maybe, that can be a strategy?

@LuLu Mom: Can you show her a bunch of pictures of girls in poodle skirts so she can see what it looks like? And isn't there a 50's barbie?

So yesterday I tried to put LO's Halloween costume on her (24 months) and she cried and then ran away. She refused to let me finish putting on anything but the skit and shirt and she kept crying it was ugly. It's just a plain black shirt and a felt poodle skirt (super cute) and not itchy or tight. I'm not sure what her problem is but she hates it and says it's ugly.

What do I do? I really don't want to buy another costume before Halloween, but I want her to be happy (she loves to dress up, she's in princess dresses most nights, but they are pretty beat up so not really an option.)
