@Mamaof2: thanks! She hasn't asked for the info again. Found out via Facebook that they visited another college today, which was never mentioned before.

@StrawberryBee: When my step kids went to college they only provided info on their parents - did not include me in any of it - I would ask to see the application

Definitely don't hold me to this, but I worked an admissions at my college. I am pretty sure they collect that information for statistical purposes, as well as things like establishing legacy. Not that The same information couldn't be used to fill out the FAFSA, but I do think it is on the common app.

At the same time, it is highly unlikely that her not filling it out would have any impact on her college chances. But as an applicant, not filling it in could be stressful for her.

I just looked at the 2014 common app, and there was only space to fill in information about two parents. But that section did have a statement about colleges collecting that information for statistical purposes. I'll look around a bit more.

Yep it's part of the common app. Just don't give her your SSN and you'll be okay.

My stepdaughter is applying for college. She lives with her mother, who hates us and only speaks with us when she wants money. We have not been consulted on any details of her college plan, and don't plan on contributing anything towards it (she'll be over 18 by then, and we cannot afford it. Suggestions about her commuting to school to save money have been met with a firm "no, I'm doing what I want". I will be following the same plan for my bio daughter. If you want to go college, you earn it and do it the smartest way possible. Being tens of thousands of dollars in debt is no fun).

She's filling out the common application and is asking for my information (employer, college, highest degree attained). Quite frankly, I don't want her mother having access to that information. Is this required in the common app? I'm pretty sure the fafsa will only want her mother and stepdads info, since she lives with them.

My biggest fear is that her mom is going to sign them up for a ton of debt and then come after us to fund it. Their divorce agreement is worded that support ceases when the kids each turn 18.
