With DD2 she became very distracted around 4-5 weeks...I would have to go into a separate room that was quiet (no TV even) and I also had to give her my fingers to hold so she wouldnt get distracted by her own hands...

She eventually grew out of the phase and now does better - though if her big sister is being particularly crazy she will still get distracted...

Thank you so much! We had her evaluated for lip and tongue tie because I and my son both had/have lip tie.. and she has a heart shape tongue. They said her function is not related to her tongue tie--probably wouldn't help to fix it.
She does get those nursing blisters on her lips from slipping off though.

I will try to get to another LC, I really want this to work out.

I think you're right about cluster feeding, too@brownepiano.

@macintosh: good point. i do that during the day but too tired to remember to do it at night

@birdofafeather: interesting, will try that
@mediagirl: thanks, i will ask, time to call the LC.
@Mrsbells: she just keeps popping off, stops sucking but keeps opening/closing her mouth

@pastemoo I agree this is not distracted nursing it's probably a growth spurt or your baby still trying to get strong enough to last a full feed before falling asleep. When DD was a newborn we stripped her down to a diaper for every feed which woke her up, then we would tickle her feet, rub her head, even use frozen peas on her legs to wake her up. Very important to get those good feeds in the beginning to up baby's strength/weight. It's exhausting but it should only last a couple weeks. Good luck it will get easier soon for sure!

@pastemoo: at that age we went to see an LC. She recommended the laid back approach to breastfeeding. You literally lay back and the baby finds a good way to latch on while laying on your belly. It helped us. Maybe try that? She was always a distracted eater, too.

Does she have a lip or tongue tie? Reflux? Gas? Those would be my first thoughts. I hate nursing newborns!!

I tickle my guy while he's eating to keep him awake enough for a full feeding. I also change his diaper mid feed at night to wake him back up for the other side.

You're also right in time for another growth spurt which can make it seem like she isn't getting enough. During that time the constant eating is just her way of telling your body to make more milk.

I had to strip DS down and wiggle him around to keep him awake. I used to blow in his face and he would wake up and start sucking.

ETA: have your ped check for lip/tounge tie. My DS had a tounge tie clipped in the hospital the day after his birth. I just noticed at 14 months that he also has a lip tie.

i remember having to pump her arms like a gas pump to keep her awake enough to get a full feeding in. distraction didn't happen until later!

I don't have any suggestions, but to get a lactation consultant. LO2 would latch but let go after a few sucks and when we saw a LC, she identified a few problems and I needed to start pumping to keep LO gaining as he should.

I don't think it's distracted nursing - that didn't start for my LOs until 4-5 months.

if she pops off can you try to continue feeding her to see what happens. It took LO a while to get good at breastfeeding. I also felt like i was nursing her all the time. I would supplement with the premixed formula bottles they gave me at the hospitals. especially towards night time

Please help. Baby is three weeks old, latch was never great but now she latches and falls off, latch is getting worse and she is constantly hungry because it seems like she is no longer getting her fill. This means less sleep for everyone.
How can I help her finish nursing before she pops off/ falls asleep?
What do you remember about breastfeeding during the newborn phase? Thank you!
