@winter_wonder: It's not at all crazy, nor is having accompanying blood work, which they really relied on to make the final call about what to do. After an ultrasound, they would say, "It looks like you're ready, but the blood work will really let us know what to do next."

@mrswin: Wow...it's amazing the things we have to do. I feel like it's crazy that they feel so confident in the opks. It just doesn't make sense to me.

@happygal: I just don't understand the nurse's reasoning. I feel like an ultrasound is not that crazy!

@winter_wonder: that nurse sounds awful, and you're not wrong to ask for standard monitoring. I would discuss that with your doctor for sure!

@winter_wonder: For sure you should push for at least one ultrasound during the cycle to see where you are at/what the response is especially because otherwise you could have a ton of follicles and you wouldn't know. And don't worry about testing too often....test as many times as makes you comfortable!

A little story for you, the clinic I am at is my second, when I switched they wanted to do an IUI and I had a couple of ultrasounds. The nurse told me to test every day between ultrasounds and to call once I got a positive OPK and they would schedule it. Well I took an OPK in the morning and it was negative but when they got my blood work back that afternoon they could see that I was already surging and we had to scramble to schedule an IUI for the next morning. Had I not had the blood work we would have completely missed it. After that the RE told me that we would not rely on OPK's for me.

@bluestriped bee: Wow, that is early! I'm definitely going to advocate for more monitoring.

That's great that you're now at the clinic that seems to have higher success rates. I hope you're one of those this month  !

I'm on femera (letrozole) and I've been coming in at day 9 for an u/s and blood work and for the last 3 cycles, I've had mature follicles and triggered that day for IUI the next day. So it is possible to ovulate that soon on femera.

I agree with others that monitoring is better. My last RE did bloodwork only 6 months a year. They, also, had some other issues that caused me to switch.

ETA: My new RE did so much more diagnostic testing than my last RE and I'm so happy they did because I have now been diagnosed. My new RE has been known to get people pregnant that had no success at other clinics.

@ShootingStar: I'm glad something worked for you!

I've had blood work for one cycle and also an ultrasound that indicated ovulation occurred (that was 2 cycles ago). It was one of my required tests before we started with IUIs. But, I don't get blood work after each cycle to confirm ovulation.

I hate being unexplained...sometimes I wish there was something that could be found and "fixable" :bummed:

@winter_wonder: I'm a huge advocate for monitoring because I had tons of trouble responding to meds. Before I was treated I would get OPKs that looked like they were either positive or just a smidge off. Turns out I was never ovulating due to PCOS. And it took so many doses of multiple meds to find something that worked.

Do you at least get blood work confirming ovulation? If you're undiagnosed I don't think they should be so cavalier as to shrug you off.

@ShootingStar: No male IF issues, it's unexplained on my end. I agree with your point about wasting money on the IUIs! It's really frustrating especially since I keep doubting myself when I talk to the nurse. I'm normally one to speak my mind, but then I keep thinking "well, she does this every day..."

@shootingstar: I currently have no monitoring. I'm just supposed to schedule an IUI for the day after I get a positive opk. My doctor doesn't think I have an issue with ovulating and feels the ultrasounds would be a waste of money. sigh...... :meh:

@winter_wonder: I think you should talk over your plan with your RE. Monitoring is essential if you have ovulation problems. When I was seeing an RE to get pregnant I never once took an OPK. I had ultrasounds and bloodwork regularly to show what size my follicles were. You should only be using OPKs right at the end when your RE knows your follicles have reached maturity. I didn't use OPKs though because I took the trigger shot.

What amount of monitoring are they currently having you do?

@winter_wonder: I agree with @marionberry: don't let the nurse stop you from advocating for yourself. Sometimes you need to insist on something because you know yourself and your body. I'd want an ultrasound at this point because of the positive test....just to rule out that it was wonky. Could they do quick blood work today?

@marionberry: I'm with a RE...but starting to have doubts too, especially after reading how much monitoring others are getting. I'm not excited about spending extra $ on an u/s but I feel like it make more sense then just doing iuis without really knowing about timing.

I already switched from a gyn to this RE...and this clinic is the only one that wouldn't be 3 or more hrs. Away....

@winter_wonder: I'm not sure I like the sound of your RE's office (if you're at an RE). Mine was big about an ultrasound to time the IUI correctly and check follicular growth. Don't let the nurse make you feel bad. You have to trust your gut!

Thanks for the quick responses! I talked with the nurse who felt that coming in for an u/s was "really aggressive." Good grief....

I ended up using 2 more opks and both were negative, so I'm thinking the first was a false positive. The nurse then chastised me for testing too much...wtf?! I'm now supposed to test tomorrow and call her with results. She said if I'm still feeling confused I can come in for an u/s.

I don't have pics, but maybe just a faulty test? Life is never dull with infertility :bummed:

I would definitely call for a u/s tomorrow to double check and scheduled IUI pending results. I did two cycles with Letrozle and they were whacky too. The first I O'ed CD26 and the second I O'ed CD13!! Earliest I'd ever O'd medicated (usually around CD18) or unmedicated (anywhere from CD25-35).

What @Shutterbug: and @swedishfish: said! Fingers crossed an ultrasound shows good follicles and an IUI will work out for you! :goodluck:

Have they checked you since you started your cycle so you have an idea of how things are progressing?

I think I ovulated early on Femara, but I'd have to double check on that.....

My RE's office required an ultrasound before an IUI...but they also did blood work and ultrasounds along the way so that they knew when I'd be ovulating. I would ask for an ultrasound before an IUI. I've gotten positive OPKs before and didn't actually ovulate. I don't really trust them without monitoring.

@winter_wonder: are you seeing an RE? I would call the nurse, tell her you got a positive OPK and can you come in today for an u/s to check on follicles. Then it should be up to the RE when to schedule the IUI, but you should advocate for yourself. Good luck!

ETA: the one IUI cycle I was on Letrozole (other 3 were Clomid) I ovulated a few days earlier than ever.

So, I'm gearing up to do IUI #2 this month. I tested this morning (CD 11) and got a positive. WTF?! This is sooooooooooooo early for me. Last month I didn't get a positive on the opk until CD16. In all of my charting, I've never gotten an opk positive this early.

I am on Letrozole (and was last month), but this just seems so early! I'm trying to decide if I should go ahead and schedule the IUI for tomorrow? I am going to try and re-test in a bit to see if I get a positive (I just have to call the clinic by 3:30).

What would you do in this situation? Could I get an ultrasound tomorrow before the IUI to check things out? I am so paranoid about the timing...........

On a side note, I was worried about timing last cycle but the nurse said she didn't think it was worth it for me to get an ultrasound if I've had good luck with opks.
