@kjpugs: I hope they are able to do that for you! Nobody looks at the interior of cabinet doors anyway  . Maybe you could cover it up with removable cork tiles so it wouldn't be an eyesore to you?

good news/bad news... I remembered our friend back in Indy is a handyman so I texted him the pics. He said the wood was too far gone and would need to be replaced. Bad news is- the owner of the house is hard to deal with. GOOD news (maybe) is there's a door the same size that swings the opposite way that maybe they could drill new holes on both and just swap the doors. The back of the door would be nasty looking but the cabinets themselves are just horrible. I doubt the owner will want to replace them all though. So that may be a good "swap" opportunity.

Since we had to call about the AC today we're just going to wait on it a week or so before calling too.

It looks like stock laminate cabinets, so it might not be that big a deal to replace, honestly. I'd take it to Home Depot and see if they have something.

Try taking it into a hardware store (HD/Lowes/Local store) and asking them about it. They should be able to tell you if it's fixable or not. Take the hinge with you.

@evansjamie: yep, it looks like because the wood seems to be cracking, that the holes loosened up. It just fell off when we used it one day. It's a more central cabinet so probably gets slightly higher use.

I'm not sure if it's fixable. I've never had a door break, and I've lived with some seriously heinous cabinets in our renting career. Maybe try the wood putty and see if it helps, then go to the landlord? That way it looks like you tried to fix it but you were unable to.

Did it just fall off?

@evansjamie: it seems like particle board. And we would have to fix it or tell them- we can't make changes like that to just make it open, plus the area it's in, that would look capital-H HORRIBLE! Booooo.

You could maybe put some wood putty on it and sand it down, but I don't know how sturdy it would be. This might just be a case of taking off the other door to make it look like intentional open storage and prettying up the back with some nice paper so you can display stuff.

We rent and per our lease are responsible for things $50 and under. Fancy light bulb? Us. Broken fridge? Them. Etc etc. Well one of our (80's style, old/original) kitchen cabinet doors fell off. I have no idea if this is something we can fix or not. Our PM company are great with big issues but small stuff they take o the owner who is somewhat of a jerk/unreasonable. I'm afraid if we bother him about this (after our AC just broke) he will try to blame this on us - as if we were banging it around and caused it, as opposed to normal wear and tear on some old and seriously crappy cabinets.

Anyone know if this COULD be fixed? Wood glue? Mighty Putty? I have no idea which direction to go but would rather fix ourselves because I hate dealing with them! Advice welcome!!

Pictures below of both hinge areas on the door as well as what is attached to the frame.
