My hands are like that - most of my fingers have areas where the skin is split open from dryness and they are so, so painful! I use Garnier Intensive therapy lotion for dry hands during the day and at night I slather my hands in Vaseline. It's gross and I hate the greasy feeling but one or two nights of that and my hands are massively better! Bonus: Vaseline is cheap as anything as well :-)

I think Aveda's hand cream is pretty good. I'd do the gloves thing. I had hands like that when LO1 got sick and LO2 was a newborn, from washing them so much plus the dry weather. LO1's preschool has this machine where you check them in and out with a fingerprint, and I had to end up getting a special code because it just couldn't recognize me anymore! (ETA, and LO2 got sick anyway...)

I started putting California baby calendula lotion on my hands this winter after I developed eczema for the first time in my life. My favorite lotion, though, (and this will sound weird) is from Trader Joe's-A Midsummer Night's Cream. It's really thick and non-greasy!

I hate the feeling most lotions leave behind, so I tend to use coconut oils after I bathe/wash hands and before bed. Seems to work for me!

@regberadaisy: second "working hands." My husband got it for me in my xmas stocking; I put it on at night and it really helps. My hands crack and bleed (and this winter I've been getting the really painful cracks on the tops of my fingers for the first time, yay!) and it's the only lotion that feels like it actually helps even with me only using it once at night (I don't bother with gloves).

After you wash your hands, make sure you dry them very well. I usually dry with paper towel and then stick them under the hand dryer. It makes a huge difference. After every wash I use Neutrogena Norwegian formula hand cream or Aveeno Eczema lotion. Neosporin Exczema Essentials is great too. All of those work great during the day, then go for something thick and goopy at night.

What do you think is causing them to get that dry? I have trouble with my dry hands when I use particular soaps/handwashes (palmolive, but also natural type soaps). I use a mild cortisone cream if it gets really bad.

I'm a big fan of the Helping Hands cream from Lush. I also put on moisturizer every night, whether I feel like my hands are dry or not, to try to keep them relatively ok especially in winter.

It could also be your hand soap. I get eczema if I use anything with sodium laurel sulfate, so I switched my bathroom and kitchen soap to SLS-free. Also definitely use lotion after every hand wash.

I would put Lansinoh on them at night and a heavy cream during the day, or a thinner coat of Lansinoh. That stuff is like a miracle cream for really dry and chaffed skin. My go-to hand cream is l'Occitane, which I find to be super effective.
