@QBbride: Oh really? If its straight thawed 20 cal milk we will keep it 48 hrs, but if its been fortified or is banked BM then only 24 hrs. Guess everywhere is different!

@Mrs.Pinecone316: @QBbride: I can see that in the NICU - those tiny babies don't have any immune system yet if there does happen to be any bacteria in the milk. I kept the slushy stuff but marked those bags so I know to take a closer look at them when its time to use.

This happened to my friend and she said she read on kellymom if it was still slushy, it was OK to re freeze.

@Mrs.Pinecone316: I work in the NICU too! We have to use thawed milk within 24 hours though. Weird how it is different!

In the NICU I work in we would consider slushy thawed, and all thawed breast milk we have to use within 48 hrs then it gets dumped. Such a bummer, sorry!

as long as there's crystals in it it's fine! This happened to me once and I freaked out and I Only had like 30 ounces in there!

Look up some baby food recipes you can bake with anything you need to use up within the next 24 hours or so.

Thanks everyone. I went with slushy is ok based on kellymom. Luckily that means I lost less than half of it. I still have a lot in there so I know I shouldn't worry but I totally freaked when I saw the door open.

@mrsog: I agree- if there are any ice crystals its ok to refreeze! If its totally thawed then its best to use within 24 hours. I'm so sorry! so stressful! We had a power outage when I had frozen breastmilk and I freaked out!

Yep, Kellymom says as long as there are still ice crystals in the bag, you're fine. In other words, slushy is still good. You can mark the bags you are concerned about with a red marker and be sure to give them a good sniff and taste test before using them.

Any ice crystals and you can re freeze. The rest I would use within 24-36 hours if it still has some chill to it.

Slushy can be refrozen. The same thing happened to me one time, ugh!!!! It sucks!!! If it's completely thawed you need to use it asap.

Ugh, that seriously sucks! I would have a total meltdown!

Can you bake with breast milk?? I seriously don't know, but don't see why you couldn't. Maybe you could use the stuff that is liquid (but cold) to make some baby muffins or something you could refreeze?

I just got home from work an my freezer was open! I have 700 oz of BM stashed in there that I have worked very hard for. Some of it is thawed, some is slushy and some is still hard. What can I keep and what gets thrown out?
