@csross217: Have you tried a Wubbanub? They were our magic pacifier because they were heavier and gave her something to grab at. At 2.5, she's still really attached to the animal part (it's her lovey).

@MrsSRS: Wearing her is hit or miss for us. If she's sleepy she'll happily ride around in the Ergo for a while, but if she's awake she cries, kicks, etc. I think she hates that she can't see what's going on. I might have to break down and get an Ergo 360 :bummed:

@Alivoo01: Isn't it awful! It's funny to hear people talking about driving their LO's around for hours to get them to sleep - it's like nope, not in my house!

DD is 5 months old and we're currently going through this. No idea what her dealio is! At first, it was just when we were at stoplights (we had the same problem with DS, but he outgrew it after a month of two). Now, she wails anytime she's in the car, period! She screams and cries like we're physically hurting her. It's so painful and nothing calms her. I can sit back there and feed her a bottle (she doesn't take a pacifier), and sing/talk to her for a bit, but once she's bored, she's at it again. She's the complete opposite of her big bro regarding the car seat and traveling. I'm nervous about any and all upcoming road trips!! *hides*

We switched DD to a RF convertible carseat at 5 months and that helped. And I wear her. She doesn't really like carts or strollers so I use a beco or ring sling. Time is what helped the most, though.

@csross217: yes to both stroller and car seat. A car seat mirror helped and we carried a bag of small soft toys we could throw at him if he started fussing. Crackling soft books, etc. He was especially happier in the convertible because it was more upright.

@catlady: She takes a paci alright, but in the car it'll only keep her occupied for a few minutes and then she spits it out and starts crying. Once it's out I either need to keep stopping the car to put it back in or climb into the back when DH is driving.

@looch: We just recently started using the stroller without the carseat and facing her out. She seems to like it alright, but gets antsy really quickly and starts fussing after 10-15 minutes.

@Mrs. Pickle: I'm going to have to try the Boppy in the shopping cart! DD loves to be held and that's the only way we've been able to keep her happy when we're away from the house but it's hard for me to carry her + bags, cart, etc.

Practice. The more you do it, the easier it will be and the less anxious you will feel with each outing. Unfortunately, you just have to force yourself to do it!

DD hated the car seat for a long time. She would scream and scream. I had to get out of the house though or I would go crazy so I tried to tune out the crying while we were in the car. I carried her around a lot of stores. She liked to be held facing out. I would put her in a sitting position and put her back to my chest and shop like that. I also used the Boppy to prop her into a sitting position in the front of the buggy at the grocery store before she could sit unassisted. She loved that. I looked back at my pics. DD was 4 months old when I started using the Boppy.

I didn't leave my house for about 3 months when my son was born, for the exact reason that I was afraid he'd scream and I wouldn't be able to soothe him...it was stressful. The only way I was able to deal with my anxiety about the situation was to go out in small doses to kind of build up my confidence.

One thing that I did that I regret is using the pacifier so much...I would basically give it to him at the first hint of a peep, and he turned into an addict.

How do you have your child in the stroller, is she facing you or away from you, flat or in a seat? Maybe try switching up what you're doing there.

I still carry my 1yo in the chest carrier in the grocery store - that is a life saver for those outings. But, most of the time I try to do grocery shopping during my lunch at work (not sure if you're working), or at night after they're in bed and leave DH at home.

Mine didn't take a pacifier at first, and she would do the same thing. Our daycare actually introduced a pacifier to her and while I'm still a little irritated at the memory of that, one benefit was that we were able to give her a pacifier during car and stroller trips, and it totally did the trick. No more screaming and crying after that. Before that, we sort of tried to just ignore it (which I know is really hard).

I feel your pain! DD never liked the carseat, and when I went back to work, we didn't want to put her in daycare yet so twice a week, she made two 30 min each way trip to my in-laws, and in the early days she didn't even take a pacifier! It sucked to have to just let her cry. Eventually she got better, especially when we switched to a convertible, and then I started letting her watch videos in the car too...

L01 screamed horrifically in the car seat. She'd get so hot and sweaty once I even thought I was cooking her in a too hot car - I wasn't, it was just her freaking out. One time it was so bad on the way to Costco I called DH from the bathroom crying saying I was walking the three miles home and he had to figure out how to get the car home... and he didn't flinch because he agreed it was so bad.

In our case I figured out way too late that I was LOs pacifier. She didn't take a real one. Car seat, stroller, or any device that kept her from me was torture. She eventually outgrew it but I empathize with your situation.

@erinbaderin: This is exactly what DH says - "What's the worst that will happen?" He has no problem walking around Target while she's screaming. I guess it's just one of those things, I don't have the courage yet to do it and I'm always worried people are going to stare and think I'm a bad mother for not being able to stop the crying.

@gingerbebe: Did your LO eventually get used to the carseat and not mind riding?

@csross217: I get it my first was extremely colicky. DH always took him out on stroller rides around the neighborhood where he screamed the whole time and he would just smile at the neighbors and it never bothered him so it helped me get my courage up. I started by just loading up the baby and going to drive thrus where I didn't have to get out of the car, get a drink, and then drive on the highway with music for a while, then go home. Then we did fast Target runs and I definitely ditched carts (usually the employees were really nice about it). It's a phase and it will pass.

@csross217: The thing that helped me was thinking "so what?" If you have to leave your cart in Target or carry her home crying from the park she'll be fine, no harm no foul, and maybe the next time will go better.

@gingerbebe: The bottom part of the insert is out of the seat but we still have the head support in. Maybe I'll try removing that. We do use the regular stroller seat so she can face out and that's why she'll tolerate it for a little bit.

It's hard to shake the anxiety and venture out.... I'm always worried I'll get away from the house and she's be inconsolable and I'll need to carry her the whole way home crying :bummed:

@csross217: Is your infant insert out of the car seat? I forgot to take mine out with my first and he would howl incessantly. One day I realized it and he became less angry about it and eventually outgrew car seat hate. Turning on music helped - DH made a Pandora list of soothing songs.

Also my son hated the car seat for stroller rides because turns out he wanted to sit upright and see things. So we put him in the main stroller seat with a Summer Infant Snuzzler, strapped him in more upright, facing forward. We also got an Ergo360 so he could face out.

We just went on daily walks so he got used to the carrier or stroller.

Baby E is 15 weeks old. In the beginning, it was very easy to get out of the house. She'd ride happily in her carseat, loved the stroller and loved to be worn in a wrap or Ergo. Even now she's a very happy baby most of the time.

The problem is that suddenly it seems like it's impossible to leave the house. She screams from the minute she's strapped into the carseat until we take her out and nothing soothes her. She'll tolerate the stroller for maybe 10 minutes tops before having a meltdown. Sometimes if she's tired enough she'll fall asleep while I'm wearing her but usually she just flails, kicks and screams.

I feel like I'm trapped in the house all day and can't take her anywhere without her crying the entire time. Going to the grocery store is pretty much the most stressful thing ever. Is this something that she'll outgrow? Is there anything else I can try?
