@StrawberryBee: I hope you get some real answers soon! All of this insurance stuff is really confusing and even I am not 100% clear on what we'll owe.

@marionberry: thanks!! I think aetna's wrong when they told my dr office it was 10% for physicians fee (what you are describing makes a lot more sense to me), but I guess time will tell. I'll fight it more come July 1st. They still can't answer my breast pump coverage question either.

@StrawberryBee: Per our insurance, and my working for a health system, this is what I'd assume. You'll pay physician services for all prenatal care, doctor's delivery fee and postnatal care. It sounds like they just separated those into two categories for you now. And my doctor's office's physician fee does not cover the anatomy scan he does, so that's usually a separate charge they do under imaging. The hospital will charge you a fee for the delivery under inpatient maternity and you'll get a separate bill from the anesthesiologist which is likely to fall under inpatient maternity as well. Additionally, once your baby is born, the baby incurs a charge as well for care in the hospital so you might see whether the neonate charges fall under inpatient maternity or an inpatient neonate category. Hope this helps any!

@HLK208: @littlebug: @ladyfingers: Thanks! The billing department was okay with refunding the money to my FSA account/card and charging my personal credit card for it in the meantime (I guess they don't want to lose the money they already have? at least if it ends up being less, they can refund to my personal credit card after 6/30). So as long as the refund processes I'll hopefully be good. No closer to any true answer, but good :).

That helps to know that there'll be an additional fee for the anesthesiologist.

That's confusing. I can't remember how ours was worded, but I had a $1,000 maternity deductible that covered all my prenatal visits, ultrasounds/labs, the doctor's services during delivery, and all the hospital stuff. So basically I only had to pay $1,000 (plus the odd ultrasound here and there that wasn't covered).

For me, my delivery, hospital stay, and nursing care was covered under the hospital umbrella - I had a $700 copay for that. D needed to be seen by neonatology, so that was a separate coinsurance charge. I had a separate coinsurance charge for the anesthesiologist, as well (for my epidural). The neonatologist and the anesthesiologist were considered "specialists" which were not covered under the hospital umbrella.

I think delivery is mainly the hospital and then physican's have a separate number. For example, my natural delivery, 2 night stay, and all that was involved with the hospital was $15k and my doctors bill was 3k for all of the care over 9 months plus delivery - he had like a flat rate of 3k for all patients without insurance.

I had to contact my insurance, hospital and doctors office multiple times to get a clear answer - I would just keep on contacting them. The hospital actually gave me the most info.

The odd thing is that the insurance company told them before that the Dr would charge under the hospital section of the plan (10%), and I'm now wondering if that's true even under my plan that's about to expire.

I know that I make out great either way ($35 copay or $300ish to cover 10%), but I'd rather not pay the $300 if I don't have to ;). Especially since the hospital side of things will be much more!

@sunshineandsushi: @MamaG: Somehow I missed your replies...thank you so much! I heard back from the Dr's office and really am no closer to an answer; we're just going to wait and see what the insurance company tells them come July 1st. So now I'm waiting to hear back from the Billing Dept of my Dr's office to discuss getting the funds I've already prepaid returned to my FSA account (whoops) so that I can use them legitimately before they expire 6/30.

I thought things were supposed to be easier to understand now!

To me it sounds like your doctors charges (mine were billed the same as @SunshineandSushi) will be the physician's charges (specialist co-pay) and the hospital charges will be at 10%.

Sounds like great coverage if that's true.

That is confusing! When my doctor's office filed their claim, it was all in one - the prenatal care, the delivery and the postpartum care. So I'd imagine it'd be Physicians Services if your doctor's office files the same way. Hope you get an answer soon!

Our plan year is weird; it runs 7/1 through 6/30. I'm due in early August, so we just got the new paperwork for what our plan will cover starting 7/1/13.

Physician Services has been broken out into multiple sections now (last year it just said "Maternity OB visits"). It now has "Pre-Natal Maternity" (I can figure out what this one is) and "Maternity Delivery and Post-Partum Care". Under this section it states that I am covered the same as a specialist office visit for the initial visit only, and thereafter covered 100%.

There is a separate section further down under Hospital Care that has Inpatient Maternity Coverage at 10% my cost.

Nobody can seem to explain to me exactly what "Maternity Delivery" covers? I talked to the insurance company directly but they're not much help since the plan hasn't taken effect yet (she literally told me how I'd be covered if I got pregnant after 7/1. Uhm...that does NOT help me in my current situation!). I spoke to my benefits contact in HR and did not get a straight answer. Now I'm waiting to hear back from the insurance contact at my doctor's office.

I understand that there will be a bill from my doctor and a bill from the hospital for the delivery. Is the bill from my doctor covered under "Maternity Delivery" of "Physician Services"? Or, because it happens at a hospital, is it Inpatient Maternity (10% my cost)?

Rawr. Why must this be so frustrating! Any help is much appreciated.
