@ElbieKay: I was wondering about Cows milk. I have always heard one year as a rule of thumb so it’s good to know it doesn’t hurt to introduce it a little earlier. I might try and see if she likes it. She doesn’t know how to use any sort of cup right now though.

@Mrs. Pickle: thanks for sharing your experience! This makes me feel a lot better. I KNOW she won’t starve when there is food offered but I still like to worry ha.

@Littlebit7: thanks. I go from freaking out to very calm then back to freaking out. I’m sure things will be ok one way or another. * Deep breaths*

Bring a hand pump for before or after the procedure. Make sure you are super hydrated and wel/nourished leading up to surgery
Post surgery, hydrate as much as you can tolerate. I bet when you report back to us, you will not have had a problem at all!!

I had surgery and an overnight hospital stay when DD was 2 months old. I nursed her around 7 am before leaving. I left pumped milk and some formula too. I knew I wouldn’t be able to see her and she preferred to not take a bottle (she still doesn’t like it). My MIL kept her. She flat out refused to eat for 6 hours. She didn’t fuss and napped like normal. Then finally she got hungry enough and drank a bottle. She didn’t fight the rest of them while I was away. I used a hand pump while I was gone and my supply was fine. I was away for about 30 hours.

@justjules: Btw... I went back to work at 12w and pumped til 9.5mo. Then I was off work for two weeks over the holidays and EBF during that time. By that point I was no longer able to pump enough milk to keep up, and I used my last bag of freezer stash on my last day of work before my vacation.

My pediatrician had recommended introducing whole cow's milk at 10mo. So we tried it, and my son liked it. We served it in a sippy cup that we had also previously used for water. (I.e., bottles were strictly for expressed breast milk.)

So when I went back to work at 10mo I stopped pumping and we gave him cow's milk during day. I still nursed on nights and weekends until around 14mo.

@justjules: I do too! My LO never took a bottle. I had to take a 12 hour trip and he was fine. Annoyed, but fine. I would have DH mix breastmilk with apple sauce and rice cereal and give him yogurt for my peace of mind. If you can nurse right after you're only looking at 4-6 hours, which should be easier.

@ElbieKay: I need to write that down on post it notes everywhere!
@bhbee: thanks for sharing your experience. I am worried about dehydration since I’ll try to keep nursing up until they put me under but I can’t have food or water for 6 hours prior.
@Mrs. Champagne: I am getting 3 teeth out: two impacted and one that’s infected and in a horrible position which he dentist says will be complicated to get out. So I’m really nervous I’ll be in a lot of pain and it will be hard to keep nursing. Thanks for sharing your experience I hope if worse comes to worse she’ll take a bottle. I am so thankful my mom will fly in to help. I also have a 2 year old son.
@Pollywog: yes. I always think of the worst case situations. I need take deep breaths. Haha.

She will be fine. Seriously. I'd give her a hardy meal (yogurt, applesauce and cereal) and not stress. She'll be fine, your supply will be fine.. It may dip temporarily, but she'll get enough and it'll bounce back.

Straw cup... for baby. Not you! No straws for you haha.

I had wisdom tooth surgery when my dd was about 10 months. It definitely ruined my supply. My supply wasn't great at that point, but she was ebf. I was in too much pain/sleepy to pump a lot though. So if you made it a priority you could probably keep your supply up. They told me not to nurse for 24 hours because of the meds for sedation.

ETA: my husband and mom were in charge and I was in bed. So she didn't see me and was fine just eating what they gave her. She did take bottles well though.

I think you’ll be ok! Just nurse when you can and pump if the anesthesia is a problem for that. I had a crazy intestinal blockage right before my son was 6m and ended up in the hospital for 4 days. I couldn’t eat anything for about 48 hours and during the first 24 I got dehydrated too. I didn’t lose any supply right away, it did take a hit for about a day or so but was never zero and came back quickly once I was better (I was pumping so could see the output).
It was kind of a mess at home (without me) because I only had about 3 bottles frozen as I SAH with him (and he didn’t eat solids yet). I had to dump some of my pumping and he was NOT into the formula taste even though he did bottles ok. But eventually he did eat some that was mixed together. I think it had to be confusing because it was also the first time he’d been away from me, but kids forget as soon as life goes back to normal! Good luck!

@justjules: Be careful with those smoothies. Drinking with a straw can cause dry socket.

I got dry socket. It's no fun. You want to avoid it.

@MrsBucky: I’ll make sure to have a heart to heart with her
I think I can nurse as soon as I’m awake and stable. The painkiller perscribed is Vicodin which you can take while nursing.

@justjules: at ten months, I would totally explain the situation to my kiddo- “mama has to have special medicine that will make her milk yucky and mama won’t be able to give you mama milk again until <whenever>. If you get thirsty, you can have a bottle or a special cup of water or milk.” I’d recite this to prep your LO several times. I’d expect to pump and dump until you can nurse again. Worst case even if you don’t produce milk, you can let her nurse after it’s safe again and she will likely naturally give up if you really do dry up.

I think your supply can take a hit but nothing you can't recover from! And she'll either be hungry enough to be okay with a bottle, or def try straw cup/cup too. Or she will just make it up later if she doesn't drink all that much.

I think after ten months of exclusive nursing your supply is probably well-established that it will be fine. I would try to have smoothie ingredients on hand with some high fat Greek yogurt to put in them.

@JennyPenny: I had this experience too when my LO (now big) was about 11mos. I had BAD norovirus for 4 days. My supply took a hit by days 4/5 but, it wasn't as if it was *gone* and there was no noticeable change in the first couple days.

I think you'll be able to produce milk just fine. I just recently had a bad case of stomach bug so I lost a ton of nutrients from that, and could basically only stomach gatorade and broth for the next 36 hrs. DS didn't seem to notice if he was getting less. With solids thrown in there too I don't think a day will mess things up too badly.

I was going to suggest a straw cup too. My younger one refused bottles but took straw cups of milk in a pinch. She will probably eat a little more at meals and eventually give in and drink from a cup.

I’m sorry you are going through that- it sounds really painful!! You can get enough calories through a liquid diet though, just focus on calorie and nutrient dense stuff when you can. Just no straws for you!

@justjules: my 8mo DD won't take a bottle but she has mastered the cup in the past few weeks. it hasn't replaced feedings yet but in an emergency type situation like you're describing, totally could. she uses the zoli cup if it helps!

911... ok trying not to freak myself out but I need help.
Quick backstory: I have only EBF my 10mo old. We tried a bottle a few times but she never drank from it. Fine. Nursing is not a problem. She eats small meals for B/L/D. Nurses maybe 5x a day.

I developed extreme pain in my mouth a few days ago. Finally went to the dentist- turns out I have a badly infected wisdom tooth. It’s positioned awkwardly and only pops out a little. I need to be put under to get it removed. It’s a little more complicated than your general wisdom tooth extraction because the roots are huge and close to my jaw bone and nerve. The whole procedure should only take about 1-2 hours. I can’t eat 6 hours ahead of the procedure, can only have liquids for the next day... I’m very afraid I won’t produce milk because of this.

I guess if baby is hungry enough she will drink from the bottle? I’m afraid of traumatizing her if I suddenly can’t nurse her. Any tips?
