I could have easily written the same thing! We are working through the same thing (17 months). He is pretty good when my husband drops him off to work out, but when I do it- ugh, scream fest!!

Mainly I try to get him distracted then slip away. By the time we come back someone is carrying him while he fusses, then he goes into a full fledged melt down when we pick him up.

I'm def. subscribing for ideas, since so far it is just try, try, try again for me. We've never done daycare, so this is new territory for us over the past month.

Maybe get some special toy or book or activity (stickers?) that he is excited about and only gets to do or play with at the gym? Are they allowed to have snacks in there? My kid will hang out anywhere and with anyone if there are goldfish involved.

I have been taking my 9 week old. She had more meltdowns in the beginning but has gotten used to it. I go at the same time every day, so it's a routine she is used to. Maybe being a book he can be read?

Consistency! Go as much as possible. Eventually he'll get it. Good luck!

@Mrs. Stroller: Maybe it's different because my son goes to a center and there are a bunch of teachers that cycle in and out of the room?

@littlek: That's why I was so shocked - he's been going to daycare since he was 12w old. I thought my plan was golden! I'll try bringing his lovey next time, it was dumb to go without it.

My LO is used to going to daycare, so we take him to the daycare at gym with no issues. Maybe bring a special toy from home? Or food?

@Mrs. Stroller: I would definitely keep at it ... that happened to me the first few times. And then he would begrudgingly tolerate it, but I don't think we went frequently enough for him to *like* it. So if you can make it part of a routine, where he knows what to expect, I would bet he'll start to warm up to it.

Practice, practice, practice! I used to bring my son to a drop off center at the mall (sounds sketchy, but it was reputable). The first time he lasted 15 minutes!

I stopped taking mine from January - June of this year because I could only workout for 10 minutes before they called me back. Then I tried it again last week and his friend was there and no problem (he is 25 months now).

Good Luck and I think it is just a phase (so by leaving him you aren't doing any lasting damage).

I took M (18m) to the childcare at my gym for the first time today. We signed in and I found a toy for him and he was happily playing with a stroller when I left. The staff came to get me 20 minutes later saying he wouldn't stop crying. That's an understatement. He was hysterical. I think that one other kid's mom came to get her, it wasn't me, he remembered I was gone and he melted down. I calmed him down and then after getting my stuff from the locker room together we played for 10 minutes in the center. He was happy to play with their toys then!

Going to the gym together is something I really wanted to do now that I'm not working. I'm feeling pretty defeated. Do you guys have any suggestions on how I can get him to be happier there?
