I would deffo get a second opinion on the tongue tie. Here's my post from when my LO had his clipped, you can see it was v similar symptoms. http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/tongue-tie-clipping-at-5-months

Also well worth a look at the post that @erinpye: linked to above, I found it v reassuring and helpful after my LOs procedure as it took another 3 weeks or so afterwards for things to improve. Sorry to keep rattling on about it, I know there are other avenues - it's just that I went through months of being miserable on an elimination diet with a miserable baby, and I wish I had known about TT issues sooner!

@pmrlady: posterior tongue tie absolutely 100% affects latch. If baby can't lift the tongue enough, air gets in, causing gas and reflux. My LO's symptoms started at 5 weeks (until then she just slept and ate a lot and wasn't super colicky) and was diagnosed as reflux over and over. Reflux was the secondary issue- the PTT caused it. None of the reflux meds, including Zantac worked, we had to have her tie released, and then it vanished completely.

@pmrlady: We started out on Zantac, which worked for about a week or so and then quickly stopped working. He's now on Prilosec, which has been working great (although we have needed to increase the dosage once or twice). I really hope you find a solution!

I had a colicky reflux baby and switched to EPing in Dr. Brown bottles, gas drops, and got medication for reflux. Zantac worked for a month and then it stopped working and we switched to Prevacid and he's been so much better. The colic peaked at 10-11 weeks and j thought I was gonna die but he turned the corner after that. I'm still on a very restricted diet but I'm starting to add a little bit of banned foods since DS is about 5 months and a lot of his issues are supposed to start getting better at 6 months.

I had issues with this too, though it was a complicated problem (milk supply). Have you checked in with an IBCLC (outside of the hospital)? A good one could help you figure out what's going on.

Thank you all for the advice. She does have a posterior tongue tie but the LC at the hospital said it wasn't affecting her latch. And I'm assuming if it was the tongue, she would have had these problems from the beginning? It only started a few days ago.
I will definitely ask the ped if it could be reflux.
Maybe I should try feeding her from a bottle and see if that helps in case my milk flow is off.

many hugs to you! we went through this also, and it was so hard. i think my LO had reflux, but it didn't last long enough to warrant the ped looking at it (instead, our issue became gas...horrible horrible gas). i would ask your ped about reflux, and like the others suggested, tongue ties.

FYI, gas drops and gripe water didn't help us much either. or at all.

You've had some great advice but I also wanted to suggest giving your LO your pinky finger to suck on (nail to tongue) as another option for soothing. Maybe she needs a bit of sucking before she goes to the breast?

Some Babys are also fussy when the Breast flow is too fast or too slow. Is your milk supply low in the evenings and maybe she's fussy it's not coming out fast enough?

@pmrlady: So sorry you are dealing with this! I had a really similar experience early on (my LO is now almost 5 months). My LO did this often; he rarely spit up and was gaining well, but it turned out to be silent reflux (coupled with an oversupply/overactive letdown). It might be worth mentioning your ped and/or seeing an LC to rule out (or get tips for dealing with) an oversupply/overactive letdown.

ETA: one thing that made feeding easier while we got the reflux handled was swaddling him first, and then feeding. It also seemed to bother him less if I did football hold instead of cradle/cross-cradle.

Yep I agree with the above tongue tie mentions. My baby was colicky and battled, arched, and screamed every time I tried to nurse her, from 5 weeks until 6 months when we had her posterior tongue tie and upper lip tie corrected. I wrote about my experience with it with my first baby, here: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/high-needs-colicky-acid-reflux-babies

Hugs. Whatever is the issue, I hope it gets sorted very soon. Having a colicky baby is extremely difficult.

I'm so sorry!

First, this is VERY normal for a 4 week old. This is their fussiest period. For my girls I found walking around helped. I've tried bicycles, gas drops, gripe water and lastly the windi really does seem to help alleviate gas and stomach pressure!

The symptoms for MSPI, "colic" and gassy baby are sooo similar it's hard to tell!

Yeah, it definitely sounds like posterior tongue tie and lip tie issues to me. I had the same stuff going on with my first and he had those ties but they were undiagnosed. I would consult with an LC or ENT and have her checked out.

I hope you are able to resolve these feeding issues!

For my son, it turned out to be reflux, but he was a spitter. Until we figured it out and got him on meds, and even for a bit after, I'd try different nursing positions ( sometimes laying down in our bed worked best), and I'd sing to him and rub his foot or hand. Strange, but it helped.

Just a thought, has she been checked for a tongue tie? My LO had a posterior tongue tie and it caused symptoms just like this. He would get so tired and frustrated trying to feed, he would end up screaming his head off, arching away etc. His weight gain was fine but that was because I had an oversupply and he fed like every half hour! Sending hugs - I know it's so hard dealing with feeding troubles and colic

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this...this was pretty much our life the first 6 weeks, so I can commiserate how difficult it is. We went to weekly lactation group meetings and found out that she was getting a ton of milk in 2 minutes or less, due to my forceful letdown and oversupply. She also had a tongue tie as well. I slso tried changing my diet but that didn't seem to help. What did help was pumping/expressing milk before I actually fed her so that it wasn't so forceful and it was easier for her to manage. Goodluck and I hope you find a solution soon! It really is so tough

I really need help with my EBF 4 week old during her colicky times. For the past few days, she has had these long crying episodes and it seems to be from tummy issues. I don't know if it's gas or she's straining to poop but she is grunting and grimacing in between crying and seems very uncomfortable. The problem comes when she wants to eat and is showing hunger signs like rooting and putting hands in her mouth. When I latch her, she starts sucking vigorously with eyes wide open like she's starving but after a minute or two, she starts grunting/grimacing/ pulling her legs up and looks like she's in pain. She unlatches which causes her to get mad and start screaming. I latch her on again but the same thing happens. It's like she wants to keep eating but can't because something is bothering her. I try burping her and giving her the gas drops but it doesn't seem to help. I end up trying to soothe her in other ways (rocking, using white noise, pacing) which helps for a few minutes but once she realizes that she's still hungry she starts screaming again. It sometimes takes 2 hours for her to finally go to sleep.

I don't know if it's something in my milk because at other times of the day when she's not having these tummy issues, she nurses just fine. I've cut out dairy and spicy foods and "gas-causing" foods like beans and broccoli but I have no idea what is causing this. I even gave her formula at one point to try to calm her down.
Her poops are normal for a breastfed baby, she sometimes has spit up but no vomiting. She's gaining weight beautifully.

It's so frustrating because she looks miserable and I don't know how to help her. Not to mention the fatigue and sleep deprivation from trying to get her to go to sleep. Any one else had to deal with this?
