I would sleep with the baby in the living room at first and then transition baby to the bedroom with the toddler. If the older LO were to sleep in the living room you'd be stuck tiptoeing or sitting in a dark room when the kids are down for the night. Unless your living room is maybe L shaped where a corner that already has 3 walls could be sectioned off and your toddler could sleep there while you and dh were in the living room.

I was going to recommend what everyone else is saying - put the kids into the bedroom and you and DH sleep in the living room. It sounds kind of wacky, but this way you won't constantly be waking each other up when you go to bed at night.

Are there any other spaces in your place that could be closed off with a curtain? We lived in a 1 br for awhile when DS was little and had this hallway that we ended up putting the pack n play in. The hallway had the closets that housed our water heater and washer and dryer as well as a door to the bathroom. It was also right off of the kitchen and the front door but with a white noise machine, DS slept through it all.

If I were in your situation, I think I would set up the living room to be your bedroom and put the baby alone in the bedroom for now. Then once the baby is sleeping through the night a little more consistently, put your son in there with the baby and they can share the room. In any case, I think it's important to separate the kids as best as possible until the baby's long stretches of sleep are more established! Plus this way, during the baby's many naps, your son can be playing in the living room.

As for the noise problem, my friend said she never really had issues with that because her newborn was so used to noise since that's all he ever knew since he was born that he can sleep through it and PREFERS to be around noise when he sleeps. She also turns on the fan in her kitchen to create some white noise for her kids. They don't own a white noise machine.

If it were me, I would give the toddler the bedroom for sleep and a play area and move you and your husband to an area of the living room. I would co-sleep with the new baby until your toddler and baby were both sleeping well enough to share the bedroom. I have never been in this situation, but live in a city with lots of small spaces so know several friends who have made it work! As it is, we only really have two usable bedrooms, so we will likely keep a new baby in our room for much longer than DD stayed with us.

@cranberryapple: Would it work to set your bed up in your living room? I know it probably sucks to think about giving your only bedroom to your son for himself ;). But that would solve the noise problem!

My friend was in this situation (her sons are 18 months apart). At first, they continued to have the toddler sleep with them in their room (they had an IKEA crib in their master bedroom so they weren't co-sleeping), and they put the baby in the living room in his own crib.

When the baby was 4 months old, they moved the toddler into the living room too (two cribs side by side), and they actually both slept better that way having a companion near! If you have any other questions about how they did it, I can ask her for you.

@Adira: That's definitely going to be the case when the kids are old enough!

@allison: @mrsjazz: @T.H.O.U.: Hmmm, this idea of setting up a space for DS to sleep in the living room is intriguing, but I don't know how it would work! DS sleeps at 7:30-ish, which gives us a few hours for ourselves before our own bedtime. I doubt he could sleep through the noise or lights, but maybe I'm not imagining it correctly.

@matador84: We currently have one queen sized bed, and one crib. We could fit our Pack-N-Play in there too, but that leaves very little room, which I guess is okay if all we do is sleep in there. I guess I'm concerned about the kids waking each other up at night!

I have seen some cool shared rooms in tiny spaces like NYC apts on Project Nursery. I saw one yesterday with a shared space for 3 kids! We have a 2/2 and DD will be in our room in the porta crib and DS will stay in his crib in his room. The goal is after a year to move them into a shared room in DS's room.

Do you have a 1 or 2 bed? I was freaking out at first too, but after looking on Pinterest and project nursery it's totally doable.

I meant sectioning off a part of the living area so that the toddler could have a small bed and area for himself.

I would suggest seeing how you could make space for your toddler in the living room (or anywhere you have space to create a little nook). Since you are pregnant, you have time to work with DS on sleep and getting used to the new area. I'd probably set him up in a small nook outside of the bedroom since the baby will keep him up in the beginning. There are cute ways you can separate the space. Check Apartment Therapy, they have awesome solutions for small spaces (I'm on that site all the time!)

Or you can all sleep in the same room if DS ends up not moving. It may be the best thing for your family (OR NOT!) :silly:

Hmm. I know lots of people cosleep with their infants and toddlers, so it has to be doable! Maybe cosleeping with the toddler would help him adjust? Or putting both your mattresses on the floor right next to each other, with the baby in the crib? Or maybe rearranging the condo to make a sleeping space in the living room for the toddler.

Not sure about your exact situation, but what my parents did was they put my brother and me in the one bedroom and they slept on a pull-out couch in the living room when they were in a one-bedroom apartment. Would that be an option?

@T.H.O.U.: Do you mean setting aside a small area where he would sleep or play?

DH and I are perfectly willing to move out of the bedroom and have the kids share a room as soon as they can, but that's a whole other question as to when that would be! :D

So, I'm kinda panicking as I found out I was pregnant....a whole year ahead of schedule! We live in a small condo and I'm just wondering how we can make it work as moving is not in our budget quite yet.

Right now, we sleep with DS in the same room together, but how will we manage with a crying newborn and with DS who still wakes up 2-3 times a night??!!! Any advice or experience?
