Yeah I think that long nap is probably closer to her true bedtime and that's your stretch. I would try to start the day (i.e. Open the blinds and wake up and get the sunshine going) 12 hours from when you want her to go to bed and it should gradually adjust.

Sounds normal to me. At that age, DD really didn't settle down for her first stretch of sleep until 10 pm or so. She'd have a cat nap around 5 or so and then her witching hours would hit and we would basically nurse and rock her on and off from 6-10 when she would let us put her down.

@csross217: as another perspective (sorry to muddy the waters more) but Dr Weissbluth who is one of the leading baby sleep specialists says that bedtime should be between 5 and 7pm at that age. We did this and usually got a great stretch from 6:30-11pm or so. From pretty early on. We started around 3 weeks.

@csross217: I remember the exhaustion well  if you decide to try a later bedtime take comfort in the fact that bedtime will shift earlier in the next couple of weeks. You won't have to do a late bedtime for too long. Make sure you try and get a nap once in a while.

This site is great for all things baby sleep related https://www.preciouslittlesleep.com/bedtime-what-time/

@mrswin: By the time we actually get her down to sleep, it's usually around 10.... we were trying earlier because we're exhausted! I wonder if we should just not bother trying to put her down until 10 to begin with?

@sslm: @MrsSRS: @cam: We try to cuddle her for about 5 minutes, but we'll definitely try doing it longer! It's hard to tell when she's really asleep enough...

@csross217: At that age my DD wouldn't go down for her first stretch of sleep until somewhere between 10 and 11 pm. Before that she would cluster feed and nurse on and off. Bed time should eventually shift earlier as she gets bigger.

Yeah I remember having to find the right number of minutes to hold him to make sure he wasn't going to wake up when I put him down. I think it was 8 :silly: good luck! I very much doubt a late nap is affecting things at that age

At 18 days I don't think we had any sort of routine, kudo's to you! I would do whatever you have to, does the swing rock?! Maybe that will help?!

After she falls asleep wait 5-10 minutes. Don't guess, look at the clock. Then put down.

How long do you cuddle before putting her down? Maybe you need to hold her longer to make sure she's super asleep.

I have nothing but commiseration. Our DD was the same way--I remember sitting in the nursery after I had gone back to work, rocking her and thinking "I'm going to do this every night for the rest of my life."

Could you try patting her belly instead of picking her up and rocking her? It didn't work for our DD, but lots people suggest it. :P

Also, it was game changing for us when she was big enough for a Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit. She slept SO much better in that thing! We started using it when she was 3 months old.

Baby E is 18 days old. She's generally a pretty quiet and happy baby, but we're struggling with putting her down for her first stretch of sleep at night!

We've been going to bed between 8:30 and 9:30 for the last week or so, and trying to follow a routine each night (change diaper, swaddle, nurse, burp, cuddle, put down to sleep). The room is dark, we use a white noise machine and she's been sleeping in her swing next to our bed. She always seems to be asleep after the last cuddles, but once we try to put her down she starts fussing and screaming! We have to pick her back up and cuddle/shush again, but then she screams again when we put her back down. It sometimes goes on for an hour at a time before she'll settle down enough to sleep!

Any tips of what we can do to help her fall asleep?? She sleeps really well for the rest of the night following the same routine when she wakes to nurse. She does take a pretty long nap in the evenings - could that be the problem?
