@Freckles: We don't know when she has to go.... but we also haven't given her a lot of space to self-initiate because we've been sort of making her go at intervals with all this accident drama!

Wow. Irony is: after all that drama, today was her first accident-free day! Apparently she never peed in the diaper they put on her, and did fine the rest of the day. I went to pick her up and was chatting with the director, who TOTALLY agreed it was not the right call to just stick a diaper on her because she asked for one. She said she's been doing way better this week so wasn't worried and didn't think we need to go back to diapers or even pull-ups, but give it at least another week without intervention.

We got home and I asked her a couple of times if she has to go, and didn't argue with her when she said no. Finally she said okay and peed - 2 hours after her previous pee! Hopefully this is the start of a new trend!

Thanks for all the help, everyone!

We went through some regressions (pooping in her pants EVERY DAY) and honestly, the best thing you can do is show no frustration/anger when she does have an accident. The one thing i learned is that negative associations can make it so much worse. We put her back in pullups and gently told her that underwear is for big kids and big kids make sure to tell us when they have to go. I told her that if she doesn't have any accidents for a couple of days then we will go back to underwear.

I'm curious - if she isn't at the point of telling you she has to go, then how do you (or her teachers) know when she has to go? She is still young at 2 years old, and their bladder muscles aren't fully developed yet - that may explain why she's leaking.

Once i decided she was ready to be back in underwear, i made a chart and said she gets a star every time she tells me she poops. When she gets 2 stars, she can watch 1 tv show and if she gets 10 stars then i'll take her out for ice cream/hot chocolate. That really made a world of a difference. Once she was consistently telling us (3 months), i stopped the chart and told her that it's her job as a big girl to tell us.

Sorry for the novel!

@Kemma: does A ever need a reminder while she's playing?

My LO primarily initiates at this point, but occasionally when he's engrossed in an activity, he needs prompting and a reminder that the activity will still be there when he gets back.

@JoJoGirl: I fell into the trap of over prompting during training, which pissed my LO off to no end so maybe try a few different things, including backing off a little. Hugs! PT is rough.

My big girl had been in undies since January with reasonable success but went through a refusal stage after her brother was born so we put her back into nappies for a week just to take the pressure off. In her case she hated being reminded so it was about control - she knew how to use the toilet and was quite capable of managing her own toileting. A put herself back in to undies after two weeks and we've had very few accidents since despite the fact the I do very little prompting.

I might be in the minority here but if a child still has to be prompted on a regular basis then they're not really potty trained at all...

@Truth Bombs: I agree

my daughter had that leaking problem at preschool. she was perfectly trained at home and went pee and poop in the potty and could hold it 1.5-2hrs before needing to go again. but at school for some reason she just kept leaking after like 30 min or something. we put her back into pullups at preschool and we basically had to wait until *she* was ready for underwear at school. she knew the mechanics of potty training and did it well at home, but for some reason she was not doing it at school. she might've just been distracted or more comfortable with the pullups. but finally with some encouragement she started keeping her pullups dry most of the day and now we're finaly on underwear at school. so for us, we had to wait for her to be ready at school. 1-2 accidents a day dosen't sound bad at all tho. i'd just keep encouraging the underwear!

@Applesandbananas: I asked DH the same thing about training pants - we have them but have never used them. Might be worthwhile to consider.

@HappyBaker: Thank you!!! This gives me hope!

@Truth Bombs: Mostly because she WAS fully trained for like a month until she started her new pre-school, so it doesn't feel like a case of "not being ready" to me, you know? She was ready 4 months ago... so putting her back in diapers (we never did pull-ups) just seems like a backslide that makes no sense.

@looch: Hmmmm. I don't think so? In a weird way it's an improvement - right after we trained her she would just empty her bladder all over the floor. She doesn't do that anymore, just sort of seems like she is trying to hold it too long and fails.

I definitely wouldn't threaten to take things away from her if she doesn't use the potty. It's just going to create an even more negative association.

Why is your husband so against going back to pull ups for a little while? We had a big regression and went back to pull ups because LO just wasn't ready. When she was ready, she was totally trained in 4 days and barely ever had an accident again. But she did it on her own terms, with no "method" pushed by us. Multiple accidents every day combined with how agitated your daughter seems to be getting doesn't sound worth it to me.

Hang in there! DD just had a regression after switching classes at her daycare a few weeks ago. She's been potty trained since early May, but after the classroom switch she started having pee accidents and pooping a little bit in her underwear almost every day at school. This is the 4th week since the switch and she stayed dry and clean all week, so hopefully your regression will also just work itself out. We just keep telling her you are a big girl now, there are no diapers / pullups. (except for bedtime because we 100% failed at that!)

@JoJoGirl: yeah I think in the book she talks about putting Thomas the train on top of the refrigerator as a punishment. It sounds mean, but it was the light bulb for my LO. He needed that extra motivation.

Have you thought about training pants as a compromise if preschool is being pushy about it? Or even to take a little pressure off your LO?

Also yes, we totally do the bribery too - last night I was hovering my finger over the TV "on" button waiting for her to sit on the damn potty before I pushed it, lol.

@JoJoGirl: there's a part in OCPT about learning vs. behavior and in our case, we had a behavior component where LO would just pee because he needed to but didn't want to stop what he was doing to go potty and if we prompted, he'd refuse. So we started threatening to take Elmo away.

We trained over Labor Day and still prompt but LO mostly says no and we remind him that he needs to keep his shorts dry or Elmo goes bye-bye. He will eventually go but generally speaking, a prompt gets a a big fat no from him.

We also toe the line with bribes... If we're going to let him watch tv anyway or give him a Popsicle anyway, and it's been awhile since he peed, we'll prompt and let him know he's getting a Popsicle after.

Just wanted to throw out a couple things that have worked for us. Hang in there, she'll get it!

@rachiecakes: So, our issue is when we try to do that (at home or at school), she makes a MAJOR SCENE. Like throws a tantrum about not going to the potty. We have become more and more insistent because of all the accidents, but in general we've learned that if we ask her and she doesn't argue, that means she has to go. But asking her to go more often has really backfired. That's why I feel so stuck. DH and I are talking over text and mutually agreed to back off, since it may be causing her some anxiety that we push so hard, but he's just not willing to consider pull-ups at this point.

@JoJoGirl: I would be too, especially if it was working before :(
If she's having multiple accidents a day, are they taking her to the potty enough? I would definitely ask for every 30 minutes, after snacks, before nap and before you leave, too. Even if she doesn't have to go, just to give her the chance.

@Smurfette: Unfortunately at this point, almost 2 months after our initial boot camp, I'm pretty sure DH would put his foot down at going to pull-ups/diapers. She was doing GREAT before she started pre-school. No accidents for all of Labor Day weekend. If it had been this bad this whole time, I may throw in the towel, but it's clearly a regression, not a 'failure', you know?

@JoJoGirl: If they don't think she finishes, they need to really sit with her and do the "can i hear more pee" thing? E used to do that, too, though, and got better as time went on.

@JoJoGirl: When we first tried PT in June, R was doing good. Then after a 3-4 weeks she lost any and all interest. Would pee in her panties (at home), would cry when we said it was time to go to the potty (home and day care), would hold her pee to go in the pull up, etc. We backed off. She still sit on the potty at day care when they took her, but wouldn't go most of the time. Then two weeks before we planned to do boot camp, she started having an interest again. Then you know how well boot camp and since then has gone for her.
Maybe take a breathier, go to pull ups. Then try again in a couple months. I know it sucks.

@rachiecakes: They already do that (teacher tells her it's time to potty every hour or so). She's been "leaking" - ie a little bit of pee makes her shorts wet, but she doesn't full on pee all over the floor. They think she just doesn't completely finish peeing before she hops off the potty. I'm just hesitant about pull-ups because OCPT says they feel like diapers.. but I don't know :(

@Smurfette: They already do :(

@JoJoGirl: Worth a shot to try. We give the cookie right when we get home and always say it is cause you were dry all day.
If she isn't self initiating yet, how often are they taking her? Could you ask them to take her more? Especially right before they go outside to play and then right when they get back?
