@Becksabee: ooh good to know! I would love to be able to reuse for a future pregnancy or share with a friend!

@lemondrop: this helps me so much! I'm also 8-10 and was just concerned I would order the wrong size!

I bought a bunch of stuff from various thrift stores. I also waited until Old Navy had a sale and bought a few items there. Their items hold up really well. I wore many things throughout my pregnancy, loaned to a friend who wore them through hers and they are still in great condition.

I live in Old Navy during pregnancy. I've been watching online sales and just got a pair of leggings, a dress, a pair of jeans, a pair of cropped pants, and 2 capris for $50. I'm an 8-10 normally , in their clothes and am a medium/ 8-10 maternity for them, so online ordering is easy- I know it will fit.

I also like Marshalls/ TJ Maxx, and Ross for maternity pieces.

I hate Motherhood Maternity with a passion, their clothes are easy too expensive for me, and never fit right.

@MrsH: that sounds good to me!! :) i am cheap! ;)

@oliviaoblivia: great ideas! I want to get things that will work for pregnancy & nursing too

@Silva: so far I have been able to wear regular dresses with leggings too. It was just really cold this week so I'm going to have to get some pants!

@gilmoregirl: I think you are right about adding pieces little by little. I also teach high school so I cannot get away with wearing things that are too tight! 115 pairs of eyes on me all day ;) so far the only store I have looked at maternity pants was target. Like you I didn't like the way they looked! Our school is not super dressy but I want to try to look put together. :)

Kohl's and old navy are the best! I had no problem shopping online - the sizing was accurate AND all the stuff I got was on sale. I don't think I paid over 15 bucks for anything!

I had a bunch of gap and old navy basics. I bought a few flyaway cardigans in non maternity that I loved during my pregnancy but also postpartum for easy nursing. I also got a few XL sweaters from H&M that easily fit over my huge bump that look cute belted now.
I'd focus on getting basics that you can wear multiple ways and clothes that you'll be able to use again.

When I was pregnant, particularly toward the end, I exclusively wore leggings with stretch skirts or dresses. I got leggings mostly at tj Maxx...regular siZed was fine, I just folded them under my belly. The jersey skirts from old navy worked (regular, not maternity) well. When you get big I think people are pretty understanding if you start dressing down a bit.

I've been getting things here and there from gap and old navy when they have 35-40%. I've ordered my regular size, and everything fits. I am kinda cheap, but none of my work pants fit -- they're too tight in butt and hips, and well, I teach high school :)

I have one pair of black pants and one pair of jeans from Gap that I'm really happy with. I tried Target maternity pants, but they don't look nice and I'm worried about how they'll hold up. I wear the same pants a couple times a week so...

I've also been pushing professional dress a little bit. I don't know what your school is like, but we technically don't have a dress code. Some teachers really push it all the time, but I always feel like I have to be extra careful since I'm a 20-something teacher in a high school. These days, though, I will wear dresses and leggings, cords, black jeans/pants if I need to.

I am figuring this out as I go, but my suggestion is not to buy a ton of stuff until you know what you really need. I've been getting things on sale on an "as-needed" basis because I'm hoping to stretch my wardrobe as far as I can. But also -- switching to a few nicer maternity things has made a WORLD of difference especially given how sick I've been. It's nice to feel comfortable and less frumpy.

I bought a lot from Old Navy/Gap/LOFT online, they always have great coupons! In terms of sizing, if you usually gain weight in your booty/thighs, consider sizing up for maternity clothes. I went from a 6/8 pre preg to a 8/10 in maternity clothes to fit my added weight there.

My suggestions would be a belly band to convert your prepreg pants so you don't have to buy many (or any) maternity pants. Don't buy maternity shirts. Buy some loose fitting or stretchy shirts that will last you through your pregnancy and that you can wear afterwards too. Worked for me so far!

I ended up not really liking any of the maternity pants I did buy, so I wore a belly band with my normal pants and a longish shirt most days any way.

But, my best bets were target's maternity tank tops under an open button up shirt, and some leggings that I wear under dresses that are now too short, but still cover my butt.

@jhd: check out eBay for used lots to save $! I wore old navy gap and target maternity and found it all to be true to my prepreg size. I got most of it from consignment shops. Also wore non maternity skirts and leggings with a yoga waist.

Target rollover skinny yoga pants, black maternity tank top, and a bunch of my regular loose sweaters/tops/cardigans/jackets + boots - this recipe would have easily held me over for most of my fall/winter pregnancy on the cheap.

I got almost all of mine from Kohls and JcPenney on clearance. Since I was only going to wear them for a couple of months, I didn't want to invest too much into it. I got some work pants and jeans for $5 each at JcPenney and some Maxi Dresses for like $8 at Kohls. I pretty much just lived in those and a handful of maternity tops my entire pregnancy. I wasn't the *most* fashionable, but it worked.

I did buy some good pieces from Gap online and found their sizing to be pretty accurate to how their non-maternity clothes fit. I never buy anything full price there and would suggest waiting for a 35% or 40% discount code. I liked a lot of my pieces from H&M too but their sizing is more difficult so I felt that I had to try it on.

My favorite outfits were tunic type tops with Gap's maternity leggings. When is your due date? I was the biggest during the winter months so loose sweaters with leggings were great because they were comfortable and cozy.

I'm a fan of Motherhood Maternity's jeans. I bought 3 pairs and lived in them religiously. I bought a few maternity shirts from Target and Gap off the clearance rack and since I was pregnant through the summer, I wore non-maternity dresses that fit over my bump.

ASOS is a good one. They have sales often and I've found that their maternity clothes are often on the cheaper side especially if you avoid some brands they sell like Isabella Oliver and stick with ASOS brand. Free shipping and free returns. Dresses and bottoms are tts from what I've experienced but size down in tops.

I've been able to get some crazy great deals on maternity clothes from both GAP and Old Navy by paying attention to their 35% or 40% off sales (and these seem to come around at least once a month if not more frequently). GAP's Fall sale is up to 60% off. GAP is true to size for me other than their jeans/pants. I had to size down one size.

Help! I'm not very good at shopping / styling. I would happily live in yoga pants & tshirts but I'm a teacher so I need to look presentable! ;) I also live in a mostly rural area and the only stores I have access to are a small Motherhood Maternity & Kohl's (and they are an hour away!). It's time to start shopping for some maternity clothes. We are also buying a house so I want to stick to a reasonable budget.

What are/were your favorite maternity outfits or items of clothing? Where did you buy them? If you shopped online, did you have any trouble with sizing, etc?

Thanks in advance for helping a fashion-clueless girl!! :)
