That's cute. RE the "if I could take it down and put it in my room", nah, we need to share it with everybody, just like you can't chop a tree and put it in your room! haha

We r not there yet so I am not offering much help, but this is fun!

@T-Mom: I like both of those book ideas. I've read the former, and I have a couple books from the same series as the latter, and I like them.

@mrbee: I'm not familiar with Transformers, but if they've got a good visualization, that would be great! I'll check it out. :) We run a fine line between facts and fiction about the solar system over here, too. On the one hand, we read non-fiction books that explain how humans have sent satellites and rovers to Mars and there isn't life there as far as we know, and on the other we read things like Oliver Jeffers' "The Way Back Home," which features a boy flying to the Moon in a plane and the Martian he meets there. I figure at age 3, the lines between fact and fantasy are pretty blurred in general, so it'll all work out in the end!

@honeybear: I've thought about getting this book for my DD who asks about the moon all the time! Adding it to our wish list...
http://www.amazon.com/The-Moon-Book-Deborah-Short/dp/0823413640

I thought this one looked really good too: http://www.amazon.com/Seems-Change-Lets-Read-Find-Out-Science/dp/0064450651/ref=pd_sim_b_3

Maybe you could also take Charlie to a space museum? I think the Intrepid museum in NY has space stuff, but not sure... I know it has a shuttle at least.

@mrbee: I believe on Amazon Prime there are old episodes of Magic School Bus and I think there was a good space episode. It was a bit too advanced for her at age 2 but Charlie might get it.

@honeybear: Thanks for the awesome tips!!

I remember the locked rotation, from Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon. There are also Decepticons living on the dark side of the moon, hmm maybe I should just show Charlie the opening to Transformers 3?

LO is into space, so we've looked at a lot of books/media on the subject. I like Gail Gibbons' "The Moon Book". The concepts of rotation and orbit are pretty easy to demonstrate with physical activities, and LO seems to really enjoy those explanations.

Just one thing to point out: humans have only ever gone to the moon in a rocket (the Apollo missions used Saturn V rockets). The space shuttles never had the range to get there, so they only went into orbit of the Earth. It took the Apollo 11 mission somewhere in the vicinity of 3-4 days to get to the Moon, if I remember correctly.

Another thing that toddlers seem to like to know is that the Moon and the Earth have "locked" rotations. That's the reason that there is a far side of the Moon and we only see one side: the Moon's rotation has synchronized with the Earth's so that the near side is always facing us. Other moons in the solar system generally do this with their planets too. Wikipedia has an animation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchronous_rotation .

I got these questions and even tears after we read a book about how a dad got a ladder and got the moon for his daughter! So we had to have the whole it's just a story for fun, they're making believe talk... and then we had questions about the moon, of course. It was hard to convey to him that it's too far away to touch, so instead I redirected him into appreciating how pretty it is, how it changes shapes, and maybe someday we'll go to the planetarium to learn more about the moon and the astronauts who get to go there and explore.

Maybe you can find some cartoons or kid movies about it?

Do you have a planetarium nearby? We have one near us and DS has learned a lot from it. They often do kids shows in them.

My LO is really interested in the moon and space too. We recently had to explain a bit further how the earth moon and the sun shift so she could better understand the rising and setting.

Right now she just knows astronauts go to the moon, in their space shuttle to collect moon rocks.

@mrbee: it let's you pan the moon, zoom in and out, move it around. It's simple but kind of cool!

We have another app that does the same, but for the earth. I'll get you the names!

My daughter gets excited that the moon "follows" her around. So he says hi to it and asks if she can touch it. I just tell her that it's really far away. She's just 2 so a simple reply seems to be okay with her for now.

Charlie has been asking me tons of questions about the moon lately... like, is it "hard" and can he get it from the sky and put it in his room.

I started telling him how yes it's hard but it's huge and it's just far away... but I don't think he really is getting it yet. I'm going to show him a bit about how it works with a globe of the Earth and a clementine, but I was thinking that it'd be great to show him a YouTube video or Netflix documentary that explains the moon to kids. Or a good book with a lot of pictures?

Anyone know of anything like that? Do your kids ask questions about the moon?
