We had the same issue with our bed as DH is 6'3 and our mattress sits a bit below the top of the footboard. DH was worried that would be annoying/painful for his ankles to be resting on the footboard, but we fold our duvet back every night (we have a sheet and down comforter underneath) and the folded duvet across the top of the footboard provides plenty of cushioning for when his feet hang off the end of the bed. I don't like a footboard bc I like to hang my feet off, not that I can reach the bottom but I feel trapped when there is a footboard. So it's sunk in there pretty well.
