Eh not really true that fishy fish is not fresh... DH loves to fish and blue fish is naturally very fishy. Mackerel is also very fishy. I guess it depends on what your definition of fishy means!

@yoursilverlining: I was going to post this exact sentiment. If your fish is "fishy" - it's not fresh.

Also overcooking fresh fish can make it fishy. Don't overdo it!

I like a wild sockeye salmon w/some dijon mustard and herbs, or cod baked with chopped mushrooms and almonds w/lemon and herbs.

The FDA has a list of fish, mercury content & omega-3 content. If you don't like fish I would concentrate on fish with really high omega-3. http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodborneIllnessContaminants/Metals/ucm393070.htm

I like salmon, pollock, cod, halibut. Those are my staple low-merc fishes. We eat a LOT of fish around here. I also love walleye and perch fresh caught. Just get high quality fresh fish- wild, Alaskan caught.

If your fish smells real fishy – don’t eat it. Fresh fish shouldn’t smell real fishy! If you’re trying to eat more fish for the health benefits, you’ll also want to skip a lot of popular fish treatments: cooked in lots of butter, deep fried, mayo, Ritz crackers, etc.

We eat a lot of fish and seafood. I would suggest easing into fish maybe with fish tacos or salmon (or mahi-mahi) burgers. They sell some good premade burgers at BJs/Costco/grocery store. We like to top our with avocado, but really you can do whatever you like best.

For fish tacos we just bake white fish (whatever’s on sale), squeeze on a little lime and S&P and fill warm corn tortillas with fish, diced white onion and cilantro and avocado. Top with hot sauce and you’re good. We also make a spicy cabbage slaw (shredded cabbage, onion, jalapeno, cilantro, lime juice) and that is great on fish tacos too.

Poaching fish is super easy and keeps fish *super* moist and juicy. Just fill a small pot/saucepan with an inch or two of liquid (water, broth/stock, white wine or a combo of liquids), place fish in pot, cover and simmer gently for a few minutes (time depends on thickness of fish, but you can see it turn opaque when its cooked).

If you like tuna, have you tried tuna steaks? They are not cheap, but oh so good.

Chowder is also good and you can use cheap cuts of fish and seafood. Just watch the heavy cream intake if you're watching calories at all.

@regberadaisy: Nope, I use my cast iron for everything. I wipe it out with a tiny bit of soap afterward and oil it up before putting it away. I haven't noticed any fishy residue left behind when I cook anything else. It really does a fantastic job with fish!

Are there other flavors that you like? Like asian, italian, mexican, etc? Some fish is wonderfully bland and will take on the taste of the seasonings.

I personally like the wasabi salmon that was on the blog, courtesy of Mrs. High Heels I think.

My favorite way to eat salmon is to take a sheet of foil and lay down slices of lemon, put the salmon skin side down on the lemons, season the top with salt, pepper, minced garlic and couple pats of butter. Wrap the foil up and bake in the oven at 350 for 35ish minutes (the fish should be flakey)

I also really like tilapia we usually marinade in Teriakyi or those premixed marinades (hawaiian bbq, chipotle lime) or even italian dressing works great. Then use your oven's broil setting to cook it. Its so thin they usually cook up in under 10 minutes

Shrimp.

Here's a quick & dirty recipe:

whole wheat flour
old bay seasoning
cilantro (in a tube- produce section)
olive oil
lemon or lime (whatever you have on hand)

this will get messy because you're dealing with wet and dry ingredients. I lightly toss the shrimp in cilantro and then dredge in flour & seasoning. Then pan fry using olive oil. I squeeze fresh lemon or lime and serve.

My DH is the same about fishy fish, but he will always eat cod or haddock! Haddock is very cheap over here. I coat it in paprika, fry it and then serve in a bun with wedges on the side

Tilapia is very mild. I usually just bake it in the oven with butter, salt & pepper, and some lemon juice.
DH really liked this recipe: http://www.skinnytaste.com/2008/05/skillet-flounder-with-tomatoes-425.html?m=1

Our SAMs club has some salmon that's already seasoned that I would like to try. It's already frozen in portions which makes things easy!

A good "non fishy" one is mahi-mahi. It is very thick and steak-like. It does very well in fish tacos.

We love doing pan blackened salmon. Melt butter in a cast iron pan until very hot, season salmon with your favorite blackened seasoning, place seasoned side down into pan, cook for 3-4 minutes, flip onto skin and cook for another 4-5 or until it flakes easily. The skin should come right off, and it tastes very good.

A tip from when I was pregnant and had some issues with fish was to make a cheesy rice dish and take a bite with the fish. It helped a lot :)

I would recommend checking out seafoodwatch.org. There are species/farming methods that are really problematic. With that caveat, sardines (yes, they're fishy) make a nice 'tuna' salad sandwich, but without the side of methyl mercury. Also, surimi is imitation crab meat (it's really pollock) that can be shredded and used for 'crab' salad. Both are inexpensive, even the ones that are sustainably harvested.

I also like wild sockeye salmon. Farmed salmon is cheaper, but even the more expensively farmed stuff isn't very good (you have to drench it in sauce to give it flavor because it's a lot flabbier than the wild, which sort of defeats the point...), and I'm not really on board with the bulk of the farming practices as an environmental matter. I stay away from farmed fish in general, frankly.

Fish tacos are pretty much a staple here! I usually get some kind of Whitefish, whatever is on sale. I cube them, dredge in egg wash then batter with a Italian bread crumb / Panko mixture. Bake in 400F oven for about 15-20 depending on thickness. I usually make a slaw and we have pickled red Onions in the fridge. Typically serve with yam fries. This is a big hit for my DD and she will always est it.

I think tilapia is pretty unfishy and very cheap!

DD also loves when I take whole fish and steam it with ginger, garlic and soy which is a Cantonese way of preparing it.

Fish is one of my LO's favorite proteins!

I don't like fish that's too...well...fishy. Aside from tuna, I hardly ever eat it. But I know it's really good for you, and I'd like to make it more of a regular at our house so LO will hopefully grow to like it more than me.

What types of fish do you recommend for someone trying to slowly broaden their palate? Bonus points for recipes. I do like crab, but it's way outside of our budget.
