@Jess1483: or the top shelf could be a place where your car keys always land/sunglasses/ things that are easily misplaced
You could nail or glue down a thin strip of wood on the front so stuff doesn't roll off

@Littlebit7: haha, that's an awesome plan!

I love the idea of the chalkboard labels. And painting--I never think of things like that. I think I'll probably order them. The top shelf is probably too high even to see something decorative, so I'll probably just leave it empty and use the bottom ones.

Thanks!

@Jess1483: they would be easy to spray paint if you don't like the color. They would be totally functional too. Could put a little chalkboard tag on as well
I guess I said decorative only because I couldn't tell how high the top shelf is; didn't know of a basket would be too high (and not be able to see into it. ).
Maybe boxes of wine on the top shelf

@Littlebit7: those are the only ones I could find, too. I may do those. There really isn't much use for decorative stuff because it's in our laundry room. I mean, people will see it, but I'd way rather it be a functional space.

@Jess1483: maybe try running and exacto knife around them? Looks like they're painted over, like how a window can be panted shut

Okay, I don't think those shelves will come down easily. I have no idea how they did it, but there are no screws/nails/fasteners of any kind visible at all. If the mantle we removed is any indication, they are incredibly well secured. So given that info, any ideas?

@MaryM: That's a good idea. I haven't looked to see how secure they are (and I'm stuck in DS1's room for quiet time, haha). But I will look tonight! That idea is growing on me for sure... I could keep the top shelf and then put the hooks underneath, and there's already a shoe mat there.

Are the shelves super secured to the wall? If they pop up off their supports somewhat easily, you could try command hooks as a temporary solution to see if you like having anything hung there before committing to a permanent change.

Hm...I hadn't thought about taking them out. It's such a weird space because to the right of this picture is the entry to our living room, so I'm not totally convinced that would work/look nice, but I'll need to look at it more closely. That might be a solution!

Yeah, I vote for taking these out so you can install hooks and then hang a pretty basket for each person or something!

I'd probably do a basket or bowl for keys/small items on one shelf, and something decorative on the others.

Would taking them down be an option? Then you can throw some legit L-shaped shelving there that you can find baskets for, or find an actual corner cabinet. Hooks could also replace them for coats or backpacks maybe? Hard to tell from the photo how large the space actually is.

We just moved and we have this weird set of shelves by our entryway (our garage entryway, so we use it every day, but generally other people don't), which is also our laundry room/next to our guest half bathroom.

I'm trying to figure out how to use the space. Originally I thought I might fold laundry and give each person a shelf and put our stuff there, but in reality, I usually fold the laundry elsewhere, and at least for now (while kids are young), that just isn't the best space for it--I tend to put laundry away right away.

So then I was thinking I'd give each person a basket for keys/mittens/sunscreen/hats/etc, but I can't find any sort of triangular drawers/baskets that would fit in the space. Right now, DS1 shoves his jacket up there, but that's not really the look I'm going for...

So, any ideas? Advice on how to make it an efficient (but tidy) use of space?
