@codeitall: I think you would really like it! Whats great too is that the leaves are totally hidden and slide out.

@Foodnerd81: Oh that's a brilliant idea, I'll go see if there are any local groups on Facebook :)

@MaryM: That makes sense, guess I'll narrow down to a leaf type table. Thanks!

@T.H.O.U.: Ooooh, since I've got a limited time till we give the old table back, I'll go take a look at that one. It looks nice, and I love sturdy things :)

@codeitall: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10182311/

We had this table for a long time. We really liked it because it was VERY sturdy. Held up well except for a few stabs of a fork from the kids.

The only thing is that when we pulled the leafs out to seat 6 people, the table leg is in the middle of the two side seats. Other than that, we LOVED the table.

@codeitall: do you have any local Facebook buy and sell groups? Tables come up on my local ones all the time, but we are out in the burbs not too close to any colleges. I would try that and Craigslist for a while and see if anything comes up before heading to ikea- though if that doesn’t work I do think ikea is a good option in your case.

@codeitall: We also grew up with a drop leaf style. With kids...I think it can be a hassle. We were constantly playing with the supports that held the leaves up. We never made them fall, but came pretty close a few times! A solid table top seems to make more sense with kids.

I'd only go for drop leaf if space is a serious concern and you'll be switching the table size really often and need to do so easily.

@MaryM: Unfortunately we live in a college town, so our thrift shops are particularly picked over right now :( I've been checking occasionally, but I haven't found anything that would fit in a small kitchen.

Maybe I'll just have to take a trip up to IKEA and get something cheap for now.

Out of curiosity, would you prefer the drop leaf style (if the legs weren't annoying) or the leaf insert style?

Honestly, have you tried Goodwill?

We had to get a round table for staging our dining room at our old house before we moved. They had SO many pedestal round tables (the kind that can have a leaf inserted and become oval tables that seat six). We got a round table that seats 4 for $30. They had a lot of larger ones too.

The pedestal could be repainted (it was spray painted white and they did a halfass job) but the top is in incredibly condition (which is the only reason we kept it after we moved)

I also have a sentimental drop leaf table that seats more people...but the legs are in the MOST inconvenient places so it's just not comfortable to sit at for everyday.

Alright folks, we have an old gate leg style table from DH's grandma. I like it, except for the table surface. They're like inch wide strips of wood all the way across. As my toddler has done a number on the edge of the table, I've had to scrub to get it clean and the stain is wearing thin in places and the strips of wood look bad.

Unfortunately, I'm just not at a place in life to sand the table down and refinish it. For a sentimental piece, we aren't treating it well enough. So I want to give it back to people who don't have toddlers and babies and find another table.

I'd love to find a table under $150 ($100 if possible!) that will let us seat 6 people (cozy seating is ok) in my small kitchen. But it needs to be a table that can hold up to avocado smears and yogurt spills.

Got any tips?
