@Mrs Green Grass: did you have any luck with finding a good nanny on care.com? I'm starting to look for a part time nanny and am torn between care.com(cheaper) or a nanny agency...

Interviews are tomorrow. Any add'l advice?

I think we are pretty set on what we will offer but a lot will come down to negotiation!

Any particular questions you like? I'll check out mrs. Bee's list again, but if you have one or two essentials, I'd love to hear them!

This is so helpful!!

Re:sick/personal days...this will be tricky! Since lo is a preemie she absolutely can't come to work sick so we might have to be extra flexible on this one. I think I get 2 personal days and 5-8 sick days. I need to check.

I like the idea of fixed rate for a week and hourly on weekends!

I would either pay hourly or a fixed rate per week knowing that the nanny will have one day off per week, which will change. If the pay is an issue (working 4 days vs. 5), let the potential nanny bring it up. The other part is addressing the weekend issue - do you pay for 4 1/2 days per week to include 4 weekdays and 2 weekend days per month? Do you pay for 4 weekdays and handle the weekend separately? You could always pay fixed amount per week and hourly on the weekends?

Again with vacations/holidays - as long as you spell it out beforehand and get it in writing, you can do whatever you and the nanny agree on. She could technically find a separate job during the summer so I wouldn't pay for that time. But, the other three weeks are different. She will probably want her own time off. Maybe pay hourly during those weeks, if you end up needing her?

@Anagram: good point.

I would also stipulate that even though you're "technically" giving her one weeks vacation that she can only use it on the weeks she's not working. When you're on break. You're off so often during the year it really should not be a problem.

@Mrs Green Grass: oh, I would be sure to come up with a sick days/personal days policy as well. Maybe 3 sick/personal days per year (during working days?). My school district only gives 3 personal days a year, so I feel like that's fair for a nanny to have the same.

Good thread! Although I'm leaning more towards daycare right now for our LO arriving this summer, I'm also a teacher and have thought about the nanny option, but have wondered how the pay would work with so many holidays and the summer off.

Good suggestions so far.

This is how I would do it. I would pay her salary and give those weeks you're off as paid/ vacation. But I would offer a salary that reflects the schedule you want.
ie figure out the hourly rate you want to pay. There's 52 weeks in a year and essentially you are only asking her to work 40 weeks out of the year. So I would throw in one week as a paid vacation. Take hourly rate X how many hours per day she is working. Then take that sum x 41 weeks and that is her yearly salary.

Any additional days during your breaks or summer would be considered OT at a straight pay (hourly rate).

Regarding one day off during the week. I would give her 5 day work week but one day off during the week and one day off during the weekend. She is off during the summer and I really don't think this is an issue bc some parents who have school aged kids would need nanny care during the summer vs not needing it during the school year. So I don't foresee a nanny having issues finding another summer family if they knew beforehand.

For date nights on a day when she IS working you might want to consider offering time and half for those hours past her regular work day.

You might want to broach the topic of vacation nanny care too if that's something you're interested in.

ETA: for those that can't accommodate summer off perhaps that's another way to cut down your list!

I would offer salary during the school year with those weeks as set paid weeks off.

Then I would do those two months of summer completely off unless you really think you have a need to keep someone on. If thats the case, I would just be clear that the set salary is $x per month with the hours listed for each month (for example, May hours - 180, June hours - 20, July hours 20, August hours - 180)

We pay our nanny salary, but our hours are very fixed. If you have a lot of flexibility, you may want to pay hourly. Regarding summer, that may not be an issue. In our area, a lot of nannies will care for a different family over the summer, for a family that may only need childcare when school is out of session. Also, an experienced nanny may have specific ideas about what they are looking for as well.

When we interviewed, we just clearly stated our needs and expectations, offered our solution for compensation, and asked if they had any suggestions also. (i.e., we didn't think to offer gas money, but the nanny brought it up, and we were fine with that.)

I posted an add on care.com a little over a week ago and gots dozens or responses. Most women are recent college grads and some seem to be career nannies. Most of the older nannies are actually Brazilian which is interesting!

I have narrowed down the candidates to people who have had direct experience with infants, have a car, and are willing to do light housekeeping/meal prep. But there are still MANY who fit these criteria.

So before I schedule interviews, I need to narrow further. I've looked at mrs. Bee's questions and Mrs. Pen's suggestions, but I'd love some additional feedback.

ALSO, I'll need a nanny basically 4 days a week from 8-4 but those days will occasionally change so I imagine I'll have to pay for 5. In exchange for often one day off a week, I'd like our nanny to work occasional weekends for a date night or a daytime activity...probably twice a month.

AND, I'm a teacher so I have a week off at Thanksgiving, two at Christmas, one for Spring break and then 2 months for summer. How would you address this regarding pay? I'm willing to give some paid vacation and I would probably like her to work one day a week during my vacations, but I don't really want to pay for that extra month (or really three weeks) of time off.

Then has anyone dealt with this issue for summer. If we like our nanny, we'll definitely want her to continue next year, so I imagine I'll have to pay over summer. Does it need to be full pay?

So should my overall rate be slightly less to build in a fair amount of time off, or should I always pay hourly? And if I pay hourly, how much of the time off should I offer to pay for.

I feel very overwhelmed and don't want to sound that way when I'm ready to interview. I definitely want to be fair to nanny so please help!

I'm thinking somewhere between $12 and $15 an hour (for San Diego) but I'm not sure exactly how to price it out because of the time off.

Thank you for reading all of this and offering me advice!!
