@MsLipGloss: I think so! I'm going to see if my stepdad can get the model of her current one for me so that I have a little more information!

@rahlyrah: It sounds like she may have a machine that requires her to change the foot out so that she can use a different stitch?

@rahlyrah: Um... For less than 200 dollars.. you should go to costco :) They sell pretty good brother machines for less than 200 dollars. Which I did use for a year or two when I started sewing to see if I enjoyed sewing before I upgraded.

For a deal you probably need to go to a quilt/sewing show/festival and see if you can scoop up a floor model. I have a very good janome that I use pretty much everyday for the last 5 years but that was about 400 dollars at quilt show price.

I'm not sure what change thread thing without doing anything manual means because to physically change thread you have to usually remove the thread you are using and change it with the new thread... physically/manually. But the changing the stitching is easy to do with most modern machines be it computerized or turning a nob. I hope that helps.

Brother and Singer make very good entry level models of sewing machines.

I can change stitches without having to re thread the machine, not sure if that's how they were made a long time ago or what.

@scg00387: I don't live nearby! She is new to sewing but started sewing nursing covers. Apparently, to change the type of stitch she has to re-thread or something? Does that sound right? Ugh. I wish I would've paid closer attention. I don't know how to get more info without making her suspicious.

She has been known to grow bored of her hobbies rather quickly so I'm hoping not to spend too much. Is less than $200 unrealistic?

I don't sew, but my mom is incredible! She has been a die-hard Pfaff fan for decades! BUT, budget is super super important (some of the new machines cost thousands!).

@rahlyrah: do you live nearby that you could snap a pic of what she has right now? I'm having trouble figuring out what she meant by automatically changing thread/stitch type... What's your budget, too?

My mom mentioned in passing that she wanted a new sewing machine. I don't sew, so I have no idea what to look for. She mentioned one that could change thread or stitch type without having to do it manually each time. Does that make sense?

Help please!
