@skibobrown: I feel you Mama! DD is a pretty crap napper too and, to be honest, I usually end up letting her nap in bed with me so I can nap too (and she sleeps longer). Hang in there and do whatever works for you :)

@luckypenny: I was tired of waiting for her to fall asleep, so I gave in. I didn't want her to fall asleep super late for her nap and then have it mess with bedtime.

So it sounds like I'm probably going to just have to accept all of the dancing and jumping around and hope that she'll eventually fall asleep --- or end up with some crappy weekend days where she doesn't nap at all. I'm just so not looking forward to this, since we really need that free time while she's napping to get things done on the weekend. Also, it's hard to be consistent when we only have her at home for 2 days per week at naptime (Saturday & Sunday).

I'll stop complaining now, and I'll try some of your suggestions next weekend...or I'll just keep rocking her forever until she drops her final nap. Would that be so bad?...

Since i can't nurse LO to sleep anymore, I put her in the crib and pull the rocking chair next to the crib. I just start patting her (or next to her if my arms don't reach all the way through the slats) until she falls asleep. Sometimes she will get up and dance around if she's not sleepy enough, but i just rest my head against the crib and just "shhh" her until she falls asleep.

Do you use blackout blinds and white noise? I find the blackout blinds (pitch black dark!) works wonders.

Can you try limiting the # of minutes you rock her to sleep? So the first day you rock her for half the time she's used to, then place her in the crib. Hopefully she'd be somewhat drowsy and then fall asleep on her own after a little bit? Then the next day, rock for one or two less minutes, etc.

Make that room pitch black so nothing can "excite" her! That works for my 2 yo. I had to hang dark thick fleece sheets over the curtain rod that already had blackout curtains up!

Trust me pitch black. She'll get so bored shell have to pass not! Haha

We have a map time routine that similar to bedtime (diaper change, story book, sleep sack, night night). It's really helped us put down our 12 month old for naps.
If she seems happy, I would leave her! Leave her there for at least an hour- either she will play quietly or fall asleep, but eventually she might "get it" that that's snooze time.

@luckypenny: This is what we do. Sometimes he'll stay awake playing for over half an hour before falling asleep, but I think the quiet time is good.

@luckypenny: I'd try that too. My son sometimes takes 45 mins to fall asleep. He jumps dances plays chatters sings complains cries then sleeps. Usually.

What if you went in, unstuck her leg and gave her the paci, then left?

If she's not crying, I'd leave her in however long she normally naps for and just have "quiet time".

Be consistent. Leave her there and expect you might have a no nap day or two, which will require an early bedtime. I found the sleep lady book to be helpful, though no matter what you decide you have to be consistent.

Ok, so we're at 17 months, and I can't believe that we still rock my daughter down for naps. She goes to bed on her own at bedtime, and she also naps on her own at daycare, so I know that she can put herself to sleep. However, she was always a crappy napper, so we have continued to rock her to sleep at home at nap time, and it works quite well.

I know we can't rock her to sleep for naps forever however, and I've decided this needs to stop sometime soon. I tried today for the millionth time to put her in her crib awake for her nap, and she responded in her typical way. As soon as I left the room I watched her (in her monitor) stand up, and jump around in her bed. She continued to dance, jump, and just not sleep for the next 20 minutes until she finally lost her final binky out the side of the crib, got her leg stuck between the slats in the crib, and started crying to me for help. She sstill howed zero interest in napping. I finally picked her up, brought her to the glider and started rocking her. She was passed out within 5 minutes.

I'm open to any suggestions to teach her to nap on her own. I am totally open to cry it out, but that would actually require crying... and she usually just seems gleeful when I leave her in her crib on her own at nap time. For whatever reason, she thinks nap time is hysterical.

Any good ideas out there?
