Maybe not a popular choice, but I will use the iPad or my iPhone to show her something on short car rides near nap time/when I need to keep her awake.

Wow! Thanks for all the great suggestions, ladies! I'm going to compile a list of tips for DH for the run home tonight.

Hopefully one of the non-paci-removing suggestions will work because she goes atomic in under 3 seconds if she's in the car seat without one.

I would take the paci away, it will probably be a rough transition, but she'll get over it. If E has his paci in the car he's guaranteed to fall asleep and ruin the schedule, so I only give it to him when he goes atomic in the car.

Give her your iPhone. No seriously that's the only thing that keeps my 22 month old in the car between 11-12 (getting close to nap time).

I would take away the pacifier, but like @78h2o: said, it's easy for me to say! I stopped giving LO the paci except for bed time when he was 11 months.

when I'm keeping him awake in the car I roll the windows down, turn the music on/up, talk to him, and make sure he has books and toys. and a water bottle. even then sometimes I still have to resort to poking him and tickling his feet. DH likes to get lo to say "weeeeeee!" every time we turn a corner, but I'm guessing a freeway somewhat lacks corners :)

With my LOs I take away pacis, roll the windows up and down, sing and give Mum Mums- I have to do ALL of these things, or else it's Nap City for DD.

Your lo is a little young, but my son will not go to sleep if he is watching cartoons. I would determine if the howling without the paci is better or worse than the sleep issue.

I would take the paci away...but that's easy for me to say since my LO never wanted to take one. With my LO, I sing, make all kinds of animal noises, play kids' music, and give snacks (if I'm desperate). Puffs or Cheerios in one of those snack grabber things. Sometimes I will roll the windows up and down briefly. She usually stays awake trying to take her shoes and socks on and off... is that an option? That's all I've got. Good luck!

A mirror could be good. I thought I read that mirrors were mainly unsafe from the driver's perspective (they see the baby in the rear view mirror and get distracted.) In that case, I'll get one because I think DH is pretty good at ignoring that kind of thing.

I know mirrors aren't really safe, but do you have one? I bought these really hard toddler biscuits at whole foods that LO can only gnaw on...I'd probably be fine with Cheerios or something like that too.

I have no idea whether it'll keep her awake, but, wow! I had never heard of quiet books before and they are CUTE! I was just looking for a new craft project, too.

I'm kind of nervous about giving her snacks in the car. Do you think Mum Mums would be safe?

@Elderberrygin: D is the same way with the quick naps. Look up some of the quiet books that you can make. Or something that takes a really long time to chew on... Damn LA traffic! :)

@Mrs Green Grass: About 30 mins, depending on traffic (we're in LA, so it can be up to 45/60mins on a bad day) But even a ten minute nap will keep her up for hours.

Its 8.10 here and she's been standing up in her crib and shouting and throwing her lovey at the floor on and off for an hour while we go in an lay her down over and over and over. Last week she was up until 9pm one night. It is driving me nuts.

My 13 m.o. has FINALLY dropped her third nap. The big problem for us now is that she'll do short cat naps in the car on the way home from daycare and then refuse to go down until 8.30 or 9pm, which means she's only getting around 10/10.5 hrs sleep at night. She doesn't sleep great at daycare and I don't feel like 12 hours total sleep is anywhere near enough for her. On weekends she'll do 11 hours overnight plus two 1.5 hr naps.

She's a huge motion sleep fiend, despite the fact that she's been taking all naps since she was five months old in a crib. How can I keep her awake in the car? The only thing I can think of is to take her paci away from her, but I feel bad for poor DH doing the daycare run and dealing with her howling the entire way home.
