My LO is 9.5 months, no teeth, and I give him whatever I am having, cut into small pieces (the size of a cheerio or smaller), to make it hard to choke. I have avoided really hard foods such as raw vegetables and apples. Besides puffs, his favorites have been chicken with avocado and squash (not pureed). Eggs, brown and white rice, sauteed spinach, and spaghetti with meat sauce have all been successful. I have not been successful with fruit.

I offer C almost anything but her favorite right now is fruits- strawberries cut into small pieces, blueberries cut in half, watermelon chunks, ripe cantaloupe, and ripe pear. She also usually likes avocado. Pasta and meatballs are a messy hit, or tortellini wth red sauce. Small cubes of cheese are also a current favorite- usually cheddar but whatever we have she likes. Oh, and frozen veg, either peas, or "mixed vegetables" (peas, carrots, green beans and corn)- I just microwave them for less than a minute so they aren't frozen.

And the old stand by, Cheerios, is my go to if she didn't really eat whatever else I offered.

Eta: the others are right about the choking vs gagging. It's scary at first but it's what is supposed to happen. Just make sure she is sitting all the way upright and they just cough the food forward in ther mouths.

@deerylou: oooooh great ideas!

We are at 9.5 months and slowly transitioning. She still has a lot of purees/pouches.

What we have given her for table foods are bananas, avacado, peas, quinoa, chicken and steak, pasta with sauce, shredded cheese, toast and peanut butter and scrambled egg.

Anything that's soft! they do NOT need teeth to start table foods. Their saliva works to break down foods. We started with lots of steamed and roasted vegetables. Steamed carrots, peas, broccoli, roasted sweet potatoes, etc

LO loves protein foods so we did, and still do, a lot of scrambled eggs, chicken sausages, meatballs, braised meats, and fish. We just break them into small pieces and let her pick them up. Small pieces of cooked vegetables, frozen blueberries cut in half, bits of shredded cheese are also favorites.

We initially attempted BLW, but our LO preferred purees or pulsed foods until about nine months. Now, at ten months, she's exclusively on table foods. Here are some of her current favorites -

Breakfast:

Oatmeal (Ella's Kitchen Wakey Wakey)
Egg yolk
Sausage or tempeh
Banana pancakes
Fresh fruit (berries, apple, watermelon)

Lunch:

Pita with hummus
Cheese (mozzarella, gouda, goat)
Shredded or chopped chicken, turkey, or tofu
Fresh veggies (broccoli, beets, cauliflower, snap peas)

Dinner (I'll basically give her what we're having, avoiding choking hazards):

Pasta (with butter and garlic, or fresh squeezed tomatoes)
Rice/quinoa/farro
Beans (black, white, navy)
Roasted/steamed veggies
Flat bread pizzas (tomatoes, mozz, dried basil)
Roasted chicken
Rosemary potatoes

Snacks:

String Cheese
Freeze Dried Fruit (loves raspberries)
Puffs

LO loves rice, melon, steamed veggies (like sweet potato), pasta, quinoa. The first few times it was scary when she gagged/looked like she was choking, but she has always managed to spit out anything that she can't handle.

You'd be surprised by what they manage to eat with 3 teeth! At that age some of L's favorites were pancakes, bananas (once he figured out how to stop squishing them), Gerber pasta pick-ups, cantaloupe, watermelon, and shredded chicken. But I would just give him a bit of what we were eating as he progressed and let him try it - we went through a couple of months where he would scare us by chewing a bit, trying to swallow and making this awful choking face (in reality he was just pushing the food further forward in his mouth to chew some more since it wasn't ready to be swallowed yet), then chewing some more and trying again...he figured it out pretty quickly!

My lo loves frozen blueberries (texture is different and easier to gum than fresh), macaroni pasta with pureed veggie sauce on it, and scrambled egg.

So, LO is 8.5 months and I'm getting a bit bored of doing purees now and would like to move towards giving her some of the food we have at lunch/dinner. Her pincer grasp is pretty good and she's enthusiastic about feeding herself. I'm worried about her choking but I'm getting better and she only has 3 teeth so can't really bite well.

I'm just not sure what kinds of things are good for this age! We have done puffs, breadsticks with hummus, toast...what else?!
