We've gotten my FIL:

- A subscription to the Wall Street Journal

- Large print Sodoku puzzle books (on Amazon) because I saw that he was cutting them out of the paper and then magnifying them on a Xerox machine because the print was too small.

- Fuzzy slippers

- Perhaps the family could go in together for a really nice recliner? My FIL adores his Lazyboy.

- DVD sets of some genre of stuff he likes. We've gotten my dad every kind of nature-related one (NOVA, Nat Geo, Planet Earth, everything David Attenborough narrates, etc). FIL likes John Wayne movies, war movies, Indiana Jones, etc.

- Do they have a pet? My FIL liked little wands and toys he could tease their cat with before it died. It would crack him up to pester the cat.

- My FIL ADORED these new kitchen knives we got him last year. Its the super sharp ceramic kind and he threw out all his knives and goes on and on about them. The set was only like $40-50 on Amazon. And he's not even a cook - he just likes the sharp knives. He also loves his electric carving knife to carve roasts and hams.

- Omaha Steaks gift set for the freezer.

I saw some puzzles of your hometown/street that sounded pretty cool, it took an extra couple weeks to order them due to the personalization. I think it was in the National Geographic catalog.

@raspberries: That's a good idea, but I think he already has one. I'll ask my husband if he thinks model cars would be good. He might get frustrated with all the small pieces.

What about adult coloring, or putting together model cars/ships/rockets? If you want to spend a little bit more, we got my husband's 85-year-old grandfather a Kindle Fire ($50) for his birthday and he loves it.

I'm stumped! For puzzles I'd swing by the bookstore and take a peak at a few books and get the most interesting looking ones.

Help! I need to get something for my FIL for Christmas. My FIL is the most difficult person to buy for. He asked for pajama pants one year, so I bought them and they haven't seen the light of day since he unwrapped them. Anyway. We've all (MIL, DH, and I) have decided that he needs a hobby. My FIL has advanced Black Lung and is on oxygen 24/7, so he's not able to get out and about as much as he still wants to and he is pretty bored sitting around all day watching TV. I was thinking about getting a puzzle, sudoku books, and crosswords, but I don't know where to get any cool ones. Does anyone have a favorite? Any other suggestions? He's into coin collecting, but my husband is getting him some coin stuff, so we have that covered.
