Bring a baby carrier, it will save you on the trains. Even with a travel stroller there are a lot of stairs and sometimes it's nice to have the baby closer to you on a crowded train.

Subway service is more limited on the weekends, so I’d stay somewhere with access to multiple lines if possible (and/or on good bus lines). Somewhere near a park would be a bonus as a place for the one year old to explore and stretch. Hotel rooms are very small in the city.

if you want to have easy access to broadway, but not stay in the nightmare that is Times Square, i would recommend looking at chelsea hotels. lots of great places to stay and eat there, you can stay near the high line, but if you keep it further north you are very easy access to broadway. the UWS is maybe a little less interesting for tourists, but has a lot of the great child-friendly stuff like museum of natural history, central park, and also easy access to broadway.

@Anagram: My only “must do” is see something on Broadway. DH has already agreed he would stay in with LO that night if it actually happens. Other than that we want to see Central Park, Brooklyn bridge, one world tower, Eiffel Tower, any of the fun things that come to mind when people say New York :)

@Littlebit7: we will be flying in. Is there a huge benefit to choosing JFK vs LGA?

@pinkb: We usually budget the most for food when in vacation so i love the idea of trying all the New York instagram worthy foods! Thanks for reminding me. I’ll start following them now to get ideas :)

I would say don't stay in Times Square, its way too loud and busy ( we did one time and our room was on the 3rd floor I think and it was so loud). We like to stay midtown or even Downtown close to one of the subway stations. And I would say don't get sucked into all the chain stores/ restaurants. There are tons of instagram accounts and articles about places to visit and eat, that is what we use when we go. We try to plan out in advance what we want to do that day like a museum and then research things around that area. Our last trip there we went out on a dinner sight seeing cruise thingy and it turned out to be our favorite thing we have done in the city. It was amazing!

I'd do an air b and b, maybe on the lower part of the west side. central park is easy access (and is super pretty that time of year), lots of subway lines, lots of local places to eat and it would be cheaper than, say, times square (but you could still get to times sq easily or anywhere, really). Air b and b would also get you a kitchen which might be nice with a 1 year old.
id also recommend getting a small travel stroller if you don't already have one (don't bring anything huge).
how would you get to NYC? air? train? drive?

@hellocupcake: NYC has made it really hard for an airbnb to be legal, so I would stick to hotels. And if you are doing touristy stuff, you should stay in Manhattan, probably even midtown.

Do you know some of the things you want to see/do yet?

We want to visit New York for the first time this October. It will most likely be a long weekend: Thursday-Monday. It will be DH, a couple friend of ours, Myself and our one year old baby. Tips? Tricks? Recommendations?

AirBNB vs hotel?
Locations?
We want to do a lot of the touristy stuff.
