When I have needed to do this I go through and start by purging from the seldom used places, the cabinet above the fridge, the back of the linen closet, etc. Then you can at least let your frequently used stuff in this areas have dinner breathing room. It might also help to make a list of needs for the time being, like you might need six towels, one set of sheets for your bed and two for the kids' beds but all of your other linens can get packed. Do the same for the kitchen and bathrooms. You might be surprised at how well your kids will cope if you cut the toy count in half, plus they will have a fabulous distraction after you move and they get the other half back.

I vote you take advantage of your Mil's offer and move extra kitchen stuff, linens, holiday decorations and kids toys over there. Two boxes per category would add up to a lot of stuff out of the areas that buyers week be most concerned with.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Yeah my sister went through the same thing with a small house, she had a 1 and 2 year old who was very upset about their toys going to grandmas, but honestly they got over it pretty quickly. My sister kept a laundry basket of smaller toys for both kids that she could easily load in the car when it was being shown.

@LuLu Mom: we have a small house. The dollhouse is in our living room because it doesn't fit in her bedroom!

I'm guessing we have to create the appearance of larger spaces, too, so I might need to get rid of her book shelf cube & her dress up station, that are in her bedroom. Then I can move the doll house in her room.

That's why we are moving. Our house is too small!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: What about keeping it in her room? I mean can someone really judge you for having a dollhouse in your child's room?

@LuLu Mom: good point, MIL did offer to store stuff at their place.

I'm worried about my 3yo and her lack of toys for an indefinite period of time. Our realtor said clear everything, so I'm guessing this means everything but furniture needs to go - and my kid loves her dollhouse (it's huge and she plays with it for hours). It's big and not something I could throw in my trunk when we left for a showing.

Thoughts on that one?

We have bins of the kids favorite toys, so that kind of stuff I can throw in my trunk!

Um, I stuffed a lot of crap under our beds?! Haha. We have an okay looking toy bin so most went in there but I sold some bigger toys that were taking up too much room. I also did a lot of trips to goodwill and the dump before we listed.

I purged recently because with another baby coming in the house I was starting to feel suffocated. So, I created a huge word document and went room by room, closet by closet, and explained what I wanted to do. Then I would hit one area at a time, this helped me because it wasn't so overwhelming and I LOVE seeing things with a line through them proving they are done ;) Old school to-do list satisfaction.

As for a house showing and toys, I would rent a storage space (or for us luckily both our parents have space at their homes for us that we would just take our toys/totes/extra clothes too)

We just did our basement with one. If we had to clear some space out for a house showing, we probably would rent a storage unit so that they couldn't see that we had 3 mattresses and baby swings and shit downstairs.

I usually do a one room at a time method. Tackle stuff during E's naps.....or send them to grandma's for the day :) I still have one room upstairs that's on my list to tackle.

WE HAVE SO MUCH CRAP.

We are putting our house on the market soon, which means it's time to clear out the crap and make our home presentable. I'm guessing this means I have to keep the house show-ready, too. /sarcasm font.

If you've been down this road, how did you do if with two kids?
What did you do with the wall of toys?
Get a storage unit?
Any other tips and tricks?

I'm all ears!
