@lizzywiz: I did feel behind with it too, and I also felt the mommy guilt. But now she's older, caught up, and nobody knows the difference.

If it makes you feel any better, LO only uses a fork about 1/3 the time and pretty much refuses any food that requires spoons ... And he's 2!

We've been using this Skip Hop plate for a long time and my LO really likes it. http://www.skiphop.com/product/matematandplate.html

I try to avoid buying/using plates and bowls that aren't non-slip at home!

With utensils we have them available at mealtimes but we don't enforce their use if they are finger foods. At 17 months, I will help him load his spoon about 50% of the time (maybe more) and we do hand-over-hand to spear items with a fork.

@artbee: Maybe I am not as behind as I thought. LO is just surrounded by other toddlers with great meal time etiquette and on Friday I realized she is the only one not using plates and I might of had a minor 'I'm a terrible mom' moment over it, lol.

We waited awhile for plates, I wanted her to be past the throwing stage first. She's 2 and just recently started getting really good at forks and spoons.

@lizzywiz: yes, that's what we did. She really liked the plates with sections on them. It took a while before she got used to the plates, but now she won't eat on anything else.

@mrsjazz: I know, the money spent on special equipment is getting ridiculous at our house.

@lizzywiz: My LO used to do this. I never bought the suction cup bowls or plates because I refused to spend more money. Every time she'd try to pick up her bowl or plate to throw it, I'd just put it back down and show her how we eat. Of course she got a few bowls past me and we had some messes, but eventually she got the hang of it. I also made sure to model what I wanted her to do.

@autumnlove: @BabyBoecksMom: So, just to make sure I understand, I should offer food in a bowl or on a plate and she tosses it (or tries to) and I just keep offering?
I am ok with that, especially if I get a bowl that suctions down.

@lizzywiz: there are bowls that you can suction cup to the tray table. The only other advice I have is to keep trying. Eventually they get the hint because they will watch you. Right now, they are figuring out what gets a reaction from you.

I think that is a pretty normal stage around that age. My LO is 19 months and she doesn't throw stuff...as much!

I don' know how I missed the memo on this, but we are behind re: introducing tableware and now it isn't going well.
We did half baby led weaning/ half not. Basically, if she didn't eat it baby led, we would offer a puree. So lots of finger food just plopped on her tray- it is the kind with a removable cover.
Now she is almost 15 months and tosses bowls and plates if I try to use them. And she messes with cutlery, but doesn't really use it.
I am most worried about the bowl and plate tossing. I have no idea how to redirect it. I have images of sending her to kindergarten with a splat mat.
HELP!
