As an update, I found a flattened frog on top of my mailbox yesterday! It has to be rowdy teens, I guess.

@rachiecakes: It was just super sudden. Mailbox was straight up and down one day, and then at almost a 45 degree angle leaning the next!

Our mailbox gets hit a couple times a year. It's been hit by

1. An unmanned Chevy Trailblazer. Neighbor forgot to put it in park.
2. A child on a mini dirtbike
3. A child on a regular bike
4. The mailman
5. The Cox cable man

It might just be at an awkward part of the road, like ours is, and therefore a sitting target.

Something kids used to do in the area I grew up in--not too far from where you are-is tie a chain to a mailbox and drive away with it! Awful, I Know. Maybe someone is trying and just not able to get the job done?

@highwire: if the car is moving, a bat can impart a lot of force!

I would put up a discreet security camera!

@highwire: It wouldn't necessarily have to be a baseball. Anything heavy works...concrete blocks, pipes, ice bricks, the weighted bottom of those massive orange road construction barrels...hahaha, the youth can be pretty creative when it comes to knocking down mailboxes!

@highwire: I bet it's someone turning around at the end of the street and backing into it - hard enough that it crushes the mailbox but not fast enough so that you hear it. Since you've noticed damage before, it's probably been done enough over and over that the brick is coming loose.

@mrbee: Possibly. But how could a baseball uproot a heavy column of bricks? And wouldn't we hear someone doing that?

Strange! One morning this winter we found our mailbox (post and all) about 100 feet down the road lying on the ground. We never heard anything, and I still don't know what did it. My guess was maybe a plow. If you have A/C (duh, you're in TX) maybe you just can't hear the baseball bat/car?

@highwire: could it be mailbox baseball?

Our house faces the end of a street. Our mailbox is a brick column with two boxes. One for us, and one for our next door neighbor.

Frequently, when I go to get the mail, the doors of the mail box appears dented as if someone took a baseball bat to them. I've even seen my neighbor's box with the door just hanging off the hinge about to come loose.

This week, the entire brick column is now pulling up out of the ground and leaned backwards. It isn't loose at all if you push on it. It looks like a car crashed into it and partially knocked it over.

We never hear a noise of a car crashing into our mail box, and never hear roudy kids outside...

Why does our mailbox keep getting beat up? Any ideas? Could it be the mail truck?
