It's normal and natural for babies to suck their thumbs. It only becomes a potential problem when they are much older. We would give him teething gel, then a pacifier, and he would just sit there and work on it. It wasn't a habit we wanted to encourage but it was the only thing that would soothe him when he woke up at night so we just stopped fighting it. Henry sucked on his fingers and fist for the longest time when he was just born and it's a soothing mechanism. He eventually out grew it and eventually started taking a pacifier - around six months? - to soothe himself instead. He hasn't started it back up again and he's a year old.</p> <p>I think she's just young, this is normal, and it's nothing to worry about right now. Wait until she gets a little older. I've tried three different types of soothers and she just spits them out. I heard pulling their thumb out can just make it worse? I just said sternly: "Ariela, are you sucking that thumb?" She looked at me deadpan, took it out cheakily and then grinned, ha ha. What do I do??? </p>
