@MtnBiker: we're just not really homemade gift sort of people :) I mean when LO is old enough to make stuff herself and be excited to give it to them I'm sure they'll love it. But when I'm still doing the buying I think it would be less well received haha.

@mae: he's trouble. Adorable trouble, but trouble. :) we're in the process of chaining everything to the floor over here. If youre cool with messes, I'm yet to see a grandparent not be over the moon about a kid craft. Could you and LO drcorate a shirt for him to workout in? From a practical perspective if hes a gadget guy, one of those portable usb chargers is awesome to have.

@mae: he went after DHs old watch after I asked him what we should get dada - so we got a new watch. He's always getting to things he shouldn't... He also got into my paint supplies before mothers day so we covered his feet in paint and made feet prints for the grandmas as gifts. He "ate" a card that said happy birthday and I sent my sister a picture of it. She wants me to print and frame it for her. I've been trying to capitalize on his crazy antics.

This is so random, but it's the new go-to gift for men in our family: check out the jump starters with built in air compressors. They are pretty sweet, they have DC and USB charging plugs as well as bright LED lights. Basically, it's a MacGyver tool they keep in their trucks.

You can find them on Amazon and at Harbor Freight, Lowes, etc. I actually stumbled upon some at Sam's Club too.

@MrsLonghorn: Hm. I don't know if anything is iconically him since he has so many hobbies and interests! I like the idea but I worry he wouldn't really like it (or my mom wouldn't lol) because they are buying a new house and my mom is very stylish/hgtv-ish and everything in their last (and new, i'm sure) home is very intentional and cultivated. They aren't the type to have stuff hanging on the fridge, if you know what i mean :) If he was still going to have a job I might be more inclined because he'd have an office to put it in. But I don't know if he'll decide to get a new job after they move (he'll be retiring for the 2nd time.... we'll see if this one sticks lol)

Along the lines of @MaryM but possibly easier: is there something iconicly him? My FIL is "famous" for wearing bow ties, so we glued 60 (bought in bulk on ebay for cheap) to a big canvas, like a piece of art. He hung it up in his office over his desk.

I can't remember what we did for my parents or my MIL when they turned 60 though...

@MaryM: 60 is a lot of things... lol. My mom did a "60 reasons i love you" card too so I don't want to steal her idea haha.

@mrs.shinerbock: i'll think on that. the only experience type thing I know he is dying to do is a hot air balloon ride but that is $$$$$ even if i sent him alone!

@Myicitygirl: interesting idea! although I don't know if i could pull it off before I see him sunday. I think I am a little hesitant to suggest a particular design because I know he has something specific in mind right now (He has tattoos on both biceps already and is itching to get a half sleeve on his one arm with koi fish). But maybe if I decide to do the money for tattoo thing I could at least suggest something relating to my daughter. He's a very very proud grandpa :)

@ms.line: I've never heard of the grommet... off to google..!

@LuLu Mom: He does have a place but to add a complicating factor to things-- they are moving. They are actually living in a rental right now bc they just sold their house and their life is crazy hectic while they house hunt in our city (hoping to move here this winter-- yay!). So most likely he won't actually get a tattoo until they move to this city. I have found a place I think is good but my mom said not to get him a gift certificate because she thinks he'd want to pick his own place here even if I think I've vetted a place.

@Mrs D: you know we actually used to talk about matching tattoos all the time! My mom and brother also have tattoos and we always used to talk about my dad drawing a family crest type thing that all 4 of us would get. We are all on board but it just sort of didn't materialize. Maybe I should talk to my brother and see if we can actually make this happen... that would be pretty badass :) (I don't actually have a tattoo-- black (white? lol) sheep of the family. But only because I've never seen anything I liked enough.)

@ElbieKay: interesting idea! I will look into that. He has never expressed an interest in flying but he is definitely an adventuresome sort and he likes riding in helicopters so I bet he would like that! sort of gives me heart palpitations to think about though lol.

This might be a closer to $150 or $200, but one year for my dad's birthday I signed him up for a 2-hr flight lesson and he was allowed to fly the small plane for part of the time. I assume the instructor handled the takeoff and landing, and he just got to steer once they were in the air. He got to take a passenger with him too, so my mom got to join him.

ETA: My standard go-to for my dad is a fancy bottle of single malt scotch.

Some thoughts...havent read the rest of the posters!

-Have you seen the Snap On wratcheting screw driver? Its an awesome tool but kinda pricey...$60 I think. I got one for my dad - who is a little above average in the handy department - and he LOVES it.
-Have you thought about getting matching tattoos? (I have no clue if tattoos are your thing!) Could be fun - you could pay for his and yours? They wouldnt need to be done together?
-Photo Book...sounds like he has probably had some cool experiences which may warrant photographing, therefore a cool keepsake of those memories would be cool?
-Wine accessories? Personalized glasses? Aerator?
-Cool Tattoo table book? Or book related to his other hobbies?

My dad sounds very similar to your dad (handy, techie biker who doesn't need anything). Things I've gifted recently that have gone over well are a really nice pair of slippers, a Shutterfly book of old, unorganized family photos I sorted and scanned, anything related to "the internet of things" (Kevo, WeMo switch, bluetooth Tile, wifi garage door opener, etc), and a Ryobi ONE+ starter set. I also find a lot of gadget-y stuff that tickles him on the The Grommet. Also, I recently bought my husband these headphones (http://amzn.to/1LvY0nO) and he really loves them for working out.

This may be out there, but how about paying for a tattoo design? Meet with a talented, reputable tattoo artist and have him/her create a personal design. Ideally something that incorporates images that represent your relationship or maybe some significant experiences you have shared. He doesnt have to have the exact design inked on him, but it could be a template or a starting point for a final design.

I realize that the odds of people who don't even know him helping me to really think of a gift are low... but I'm desperate here so I'm just grasping at straws.

I need a 60th birthday gift for my dad. Normally I don't worry so much about these things and just get whatever (clothes, books, art stuff) because he is really hard to buy for and I never have great ideas. But I really want a GREAT idea for this birthday because it is his 60th and because he has had a really hard year.

About him: Very handy (works in construction), likes sports somewhat (broncos) but not really a huge sports guy, into art (he paints and draws and plays guitar but he has all the supplies for these things i can think of), he is very into riding his motorcycle (but i don't think he needs anything there?), he likes technology but already has a lot of it (iPhone, iPad, other tablet, kindle fire), he likes scuba diving but says he doesn't need any more gear for that (and i got him a scuba magazine subscription for xmas). he has a lot of tattoos and wants more. He is into fitness and works out a lot in the gym (weight lifting mostly) and rides his bicycle outside a few times/week (already has a gps thing to track his rides and also a heart monitor. he has too many things). He likes good red wine but has a lot of it.

Parameters: around $100, is something I can have purchased and wrapped in a week, probably not an experience type thing because its hard for me and him to get time alone together right now (he isn't local).

Currently my best idea is giving him $100 towards his next tattoo. I like that its something he'll definitely use and that I could contribute to something long lasting. But.... he doesn't really need my money. And I feel awkward giving him cash. So I guess that is the backup plan but I'd love if I could think of something.

Sorry I know this is a dumb thing to crowd source but I've been racking my brain for weeks and who knows, maybe someone will come up with something. Worth a shot!
